<content>I will be visiting Huntsville Memorial day weekend. Can anyone recommend a place for down-home southern cooking, or any other type of a restaurant that is well regarded or a favorite? Thanks </content>

<content>Huntsville has very few home cookin places; it is pretty cosmopolitan for a southern town. Cracker Barrel is best bet. A trip out of town to the beautiful town of Guntersville sitting on gorgeous lakes and pretty sunsets - Top of the River is great. A long drive 45 miles</content>

<content>I have to disagree with mcgrew...
There are several home cooking places in Huntsville, but most are off
the beaten paths of the Parkway and the (cosmopolitan) mall areas.
I would recommend two places for home cooking.
And the original Greenbrier in Madison on Old Hwy 20, off I-565 towards Decatur.
http://www.oldgreenbrier.com/index.html
It's a little out of the way but has great whole catfish and hushpuppies.
It looks like a dump.. but has great food.
Next would be Mullins on Andrew Jackson.
Best known for breakfast...but has decent lunches and dinners.
There are many more including David Gibson's Barbecue on Bob Wallace and others.
If you have time to visit Decatur..... you are very close to one of the best BBQ places in AL.
Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q http://www.bigbobgibsonbbq.com/main.htm
Well worth the 30 min drive over...
Try the White Sauce on the smoked chicken.... mmmmm...yummm!

<content>I would say you definately have to have ribs at Dreamland.
My inlaws are in Meridianville which is right north of the city. We always, always, always have dinner there every trip. Best ribs I've ever had.
Tims Cajun Kitchen is very good too but not "Southern." It's Cajun obviously.
I like the Po' Boy Factory as well. I'm not sure what street that is on exactly. I just know how to get there.
We also ate at a place down by the courthouse that had the "Meat and three" that I think you're looking for. I think it was called Magnolia cafe but I'm not sure. They're only open for breakfast and lunch. It was quite good and the woman who runs the place was extremely nice.
My BIL is addicted to Little Rosies (Two locations) for "Mexican."

I would stay away from Cracker Barrel. I'm not a fan at all but above all that, you can go to CB just about anywhere. It's all the same.

If you're not from the south or don't have these places anywhere near you, some good novelty ideas are, Krystals (Sliders, better than White Castle IMHO), Sonic (America's Drive Thru) and Chick-Fil-A (I hate the place but it get's great pub on CH).

<content>I have to agree the Original Greenbriar (the other is newer and close to the exit) is an experience. It has Atmosphere! And you can also get catfish fillets - my favorite when we go there. </content>
