I will be in Mobile in early May for Thunder on the Bay. Any suggestions for barbeque, southern and seafood places? A nice breakfast place would be appreciated as well.
I read that Dreamland has a Mobile location now. If so, where is it and is it as good as original?

Mobile Barbecue: Dreamland (I-65 at Old Shell Road, if I remember correctly), Brick Pit Barbecue (University at Old Shell Road) have received complimentary reviews here and there.

Southern: Mobile isn't known for its "Southern" cuisine, but the Big Time Diner on Cottage Hill Road (across the street from the monolith of a church) is pretty good eatin'. The Dew Drop Inn (on either Old Shell Road or Springhill Avenue--I can't remember) has been around forever and has a reputation that I couldn't ever justify, but that's just me.

Seafood: Some folks swear by Wintzell's, but I've always been partial to the Original Oyster House on Battleship Parkway.

Breakfast: You're out of luck. I think Waffle House and IHOP have a joint monopoly. (Duopoly?)

I like Wentzell's downtown a lot, but I agree that the Original Oyster House on Battlefield Parkway is the best seafood in town. You'll might have to wait, but it's well worth it!

For barbecue: I have never eaten at the original Dreamland in Tuscaloosa, but those who I know that have say the one in Mobile is not as good. I find the meat on the ribs to be tough. I do like their sauce though. They are located on Old Shell Road on the east side of I-65. But there isn't an exit to Olds Shell Road. You have to get off at Dauphin Street or Springhill Avenue. The Brick Pit is very good. It is also on Old Shell Road although it is several miles farther west. Saucy Q's is my favorite. It is on Government Street.

Southern food: Randall is right. There aren't very many good restaurants in Mobile featuring southern food. You might try the Whistle Stop on Florida Street.

Seafood: My favorite is Nan Sea's on Mobile Bay. Very good food and reasonably priced. Some locals swear by the Cock of the Walk, although I've never been particularly impressed.

Breakfast: There aren't many good breakfast restaurants around. I've heard lots of people say Dick Russell's Barbecue serves a very good breakfast. I've only eaten lunch and dinner there. I thought the food was just okay.

There are a few other independent restaurants worth considering

Osman's may be the best restaurant in Mobile now. It is on Halls Mill Road in a house that has been renovated. Reservations are a must. The menu offers an eclectic mix of pasta, seafood, and meat dishes. However, they do not have a liquor license so you must bring your own if you wish to drink wine.

Guido's, also on Old Shell Road, across the street from the University of South Alabama, is also worth considering. The menu changes daily. Although leaning heavily toward Italian cuisine, they offer other styles as well. I have never had a bad meal there.

La Pizzeria in Mobile's historic district is also very good, although it is a bit more pricey than the others mentioned.

Hope this helps and that you enjoy your stay in Mobile.

I hit three for three on your recomendations! The Brick Pit was good. My husband who won't eat ribs because they are "too much effort for too little food" finished off my rib plate and looked for more. Nan Seas was hard to find, but worth the effort. If you are a fried seafood fan fan, you can't go wrong. Awesome shrimp.
And the Original Oyster House had it all: grilled amberjack, excellent turnip greens and hush puppies, and the kind of service I thought went out with doctors making house calls! Thanks for making it a mememorable trip.

Semolina's is good (Their salad's are great!). Sea food I love Mariner's. Nan Seas is good but mostly deep fried. The Bakery is good. Carriba's is good. There's lots of good places. When you get here ask some old Mobilian's. Run into Claude Moore's or Friedman's or Zundels. They're all old mobile companies catering to people who like the good life. It's our 300th Anniversary! Have fun!
