50th anniversary party in Orlando area

I'm hoping my fellow Chowhounders can help here: I am planning to throw a party for my parent's 50th wedding anniversary. I suspect the list will be 30-50 people.

Does anyone have any recommendations? They actually live north of Orlando, so I was thinking Winter Park, too. I'm not local, and I don't know the area terribly well.

Any ideas? Thanks!!!

  1. Nearly all of the upscale restaurants in the Winter Park area have special facilities to accomodate groups of that size.
Luma, Chef Justin's, Fleming's, Del Frisco's, Ruth's Chris come immediately to mind.
There are also a couple of hotels that could acommodate you in the area.
I would be helpful to know if the party is to include lunch or dinner, when it would be (date), what kind of food you want to serve and what sort of budget you are thinking of.

All great questions. The date is August 6ish. Many of the guests are older (read: retirees), so the idea of a lunch is a good one.

Food: They love Italian, Spanish/Cuban, American (steak, etc).

Budget: Last time I did something like this it was my wedding, so I'm hoping it's less than that. I'd like it to be under $3000. Is that reasonable or a pipe dream? I honestly have no sense of how much these things cost.

Luma's cellar looks intriguing. I'm not crazy about replicating the wedding formula, but dinner/dancing or hors d'ouvres/dancing seems like a good option, too.

      Thanks!

I'd go for a Saturday or Sunday lunch event in the downstairs function space at Luma. You are far enough out that the date is probably still available, and you should be able to do anything you want, even eat off the menu, for less than $100 a head.
They are only open for lunch on Saturday and Sunday.
The only issue I can think of is whether they have handicapped access downstairs, in case any of the guests have a hard time negotiating stairs.
You should be able to determine those things by phone. If that doesn't work out, come back and post and I'm sure there will be other ideas.

Can we update this for 2008? Native Orlandoan, but don't get around to the fancy places a lot. Parents are celebrating their 50th in May and my siblings and I want to get some kind of party going for them. We thought about a meal, but we are looking at about 80 people. Is there any places that specialize in this type of stuff that are reasonable?

            Scootersim,

Very nice of you to take on the challenge I'm sure your folks will love the gesture. Any of the area hotels will be able to help you with private functions. The Portofino Bay Hotel, Citrus Club and the Grand Bohemian all do nice jobs for catered events. All have plenty of on site parking.

BTW, you don't have to be a member to have a function at the Citrus Club and there are great views.

For a few of local restaurants:

Luma's wine cellar will hold about 40 or so seated, not 80.

Fleming's (WP) has a private room that can accommodate your party of 80 if you do apps with combo seating/standing, they cap out at 66 seated in the private room.

Harrison Graham's might be a good bet, it's a private dining venue that can hold your group.

They have a bunch of catering levels, so you can decide if you want to do apps or more:

There are other places that can hold up to 50. 80 is a pretty big group, I'd be sure that is a "real" number so you aren't missing some venues that can accommodate the 50ish or so.

            Cheers!

              Heathrow Country Club
              and
              Maison Jardin

Thanks for the responses. We ended up booking the conference area at a hotel near downtown, but not IN downtown. Having Dubsdread cater. Will keep you posted.
