Hi Everybody, I was wondering which bakery in Fl. makes and delivers or would ship to Sarasota really good Italian bread, French bread, Jewish rye, etc. Any help would be appreciated since there are no good local bakeries.

I don't think they ship but there is a stellar italian bakery in St. Petersburg at the Mazzaro Market on 22nd Ave. west of 275. I love all of their breads; Tuscan, Semolina, Foccacia, Ciabatta, etc. And they are reasonably priced in my opinion. This is not too long a drive for you.

I buy extra loaves and keep them in my deep freeze just in case I run out.

Plus the rest of the store is fantastic also!

I don't know if they are all the same but my Publix bakery makes a good sour dough, as well as a 7-grain bread that is thick and dense. And their baguette is OK (the crust isn't quite as crisp as I like it).

Pané Rustica is on MacDill in Tampa. All their breads are to die for. They can be very accomodating but the bread will still be day-old once you get it.

Mazzaro's is a wonderful place, well worth the trip to St. Petersburg just to check it out.

What's with Sarasota anyway? YOu'd think with all that money swimming around they'd have some good food.

I believe you. There have been many posts from Sarasotans compaining about the lack of good food. I wonder if you can find anything in Longboat Key. Or what about at St. Armands Circle -- there are some good restaurants there, they must have bread?

C'est la vie also has some decent breads at times.
As for food in sarasota, I've lived here for nearly four years, as a student at new college, and the best food I've found has been at small, unadvertised niche ethnic places such as rio samba (brazilian), mi tierra (cuban/colombian) geiers (german) and at the red barn flea market in bradenton (latin american produce and a killer taco/posole stand). There is good food here, it's just not geared toward the afluent retired community. Thus its a little out of the way.

geiers, mi tierra and the red barn should all be in the yellow pages. I'm not sure of the exact addresses. Rio samba is in the same plaza as the bavarian bakery I mentioned earlier. If you're driving south on 41 its in a plaza on your right, just after the entrance to the phillipi estate. Hope this helps.

Jacksonville's French Pantry has fabulous breads. Small family run business supplying breads and desserts to some of NE Florida's top restaurants. They are open for lunch with a small menu written on a chalk board offering salads and sandwiches. The selection of breads and desserts varies daily. I have called ahead with special orders for the holidays.

I just returned from ten days in New Orleans, a city well known for it's french bread. There was perhaps one restaurant, Bayona's, that even came close to the French Pantry's french bread.

The next time you are passing through Jacksonville, you will need to check it out. Get there early! They open at 11:00 AM with a line usually forming by 11:30. You may want to see if they will ship, day old good french bread may still be better than the rest. Also check out the other specialty breads, rolls, pastries, muffins, cheesecakes and cookies!

Good luck in your search!
