There is a Mexican ice cream parlor that opened at the
west end of the Winn-Dixie plaza at Belvedere Rd. and Georgia Ave. I wish I could tell you the name of it, but I couldn't make out the characters on the sign. No matter. People, this is the best ice cream I've had in ages and possibly the best flavored ice cream I
EVER had. I had a double cone of mamey and pistachio.
Big, whole pistachios in every lick, the mamey tasted of nothing but sugar, cream and fresh fruit. My wife had a cone with pistachio and coffee. The coffee was outstanding, with a rich, dark cafe con leche flavor
that had just a hint of natural bitterness. The butterfat was definitely present, but not over-the-top cloying. More refreshing than the usual premium ice cream. You have to come in from Dixie Hwy. and head east because Belvedere is torn up between Georgia Ave. and I-95. It's behind the McDonald's, nestled between a Cuban cafe and a Cuban-Chinese take-out.

the owner has three locations around here. there are now hundreds of "michoacanas" in the usa.
i had a cup of their pistachio, just a little while ago. the nuts were way to soft tonight. my wife gives top marks to their cafe ice cream.
i think that ben & jerry's pistachio pistachio (talk about big nuts and no green chemical)is one of the wonders of the world, especially when i buy it at a buck a pint, sometimes.
the michoacana makes real nice fruit paletas (sticks)
for 1.25 viva mexico!

Thanks, 'Belly. I stared at the sign for a number of minutes and still couldn't make a word out of it. The
pistachio nuts in this batch were crispy and plentiful, despite the bright green color. In fact, all the colors of their products are a bit on the vivid side, but the flavors are the real McCoy. The only problem for me is that it's just a little too close to my house. An ice cream jones is something I just don't need right now.

Just a little info on the name..Michocan is a state in central Mexico..a Michocana is a person from that area. There is a mini chain...3 restaurants in Baja by that name. Specialty of the region (and only thing on the menu at restaurants) is pork carnitas..slow cooked pig in lard..the place has 3 large pots..about 5 feet across..5 feet high..they start cooking the pigs at night..serving at 9am..close when the food is gone..2-3 PM..sell all parts of the pig..by the sandwich or kilo...absolutely delicious..melt in your mouth. Apparently there are places like this all over Michocan..just FYI

Thanks for the help. It wasn't the word itself, just the highly derivative font style of the signage and the insertion of popsicles and such between the characters that made it a puzzle. This particular place sells only frozen treats (superior ones at that). The pork sure sounds good, though.
