We had lunch at the Gumbo Shop on Monday. The Jambalaya consisted of two ice cream scoops of rice, a small amount of chicken and no discernible amounts of sausage or shrimp. The sauteed sausage po-boy had 1/2 the ingredients than when I ordered it in April. Needless to say we were quite disappointed. Have things changed or did we just hit a bad day? What is a better alternative restaurant in the area for Cajun food?

In my opinion, the food at the Gumbo Shop has always been mediocre. They used to have a commissary uptown (near the docks by the Lighthouse of the Blind) where most of the preparation was done. Basically, all they did at their location in the Quarter was reheat gumbo and make salads. The commissary was sublet a few years ago to John Folse, who no longer uses it and I think it may be empty now. So maybe they've begun actually cooking food on the French Quarter restaurant's own pemises.

Seven or eight years ago, I used to have office meetings regularly catered by the GS. The food was all right back then...nothing special, but a good value for the $$. I haven't eaten there in years, but it was never anything I would have recommended to tourists seeking "cajun" food. Go to the Bon Ton...

I would never recommend the Gumbo Shop to anyone. Not horrible, but there are plenty better choices around. Even Coops, which I don't particularly care for, is better.

If you truly want "Cajun" food, Bon Ton is your best option. If you want Louisiana food that is far superior at only slightly higher prices, Mr. B's can't be beaten.
