Had heard the raves and my husband and I finally gave this place a try on St. Patrick's Day. Had a pleasant, if long, wait in the bar. Dinner began well with our appetizer and then fell apart. Entrees served cold. Salad brought after cold entree. The waitress got in my face and snarled "What can I do to make this right?". Her solution was to bring a warm entree that tasted like she had added dirt to the sauce! (The gravel was the give away on that one.) She did comp our uneaten dinner, but the bar bill and cab ride made this an expensive mistake. Oh yeah, one of the bathrooms was so foul that I went to the Mapleleaf rather than wade through an inch of standing liquid or wait in the ridiculous long line for the other bathroom. Thanks to Mid City's Rock n' Bowl for saving the evening with great music and a lively crowd!

Sorry you had a bad experience. I don't think I'd recommend it to anyone, although, as you indicate, there are many who rave about it.

The place is a wild, disorganized mess. Some folks like all the hurlyburly. It is lively, certainly. I think the food is decent. Service indecent.

I hate anyone had a bad experience, HOWEVER, my one time at Jacques Imos was great and great fun. We enjoyed good food, great ambience and superb service by Lana and "Natchez". Jacques comped us champagne and Appetizers for no apparent reason (we're 50ish women = no sex appeal here) and the food was really great. Having been to nice, although stuffy places, it was a welcome change to dine in a restaurant that serves good food, but doesn't take itself too seriously. We have reservations there again during the FQF and all 16 of us are really looking forward to it!

No one with a palate can understand the attraction. It's greasy, heavy, cheesy plates of too much food in an unGodly tacky decor.

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience, but your post makes me feel vindicated in my negative opinion of Jacques Imo's. I just don't understand the hoopla around the place. I ate there only once and didn't give it another chance, despite living right next door (literally) to it at the time. The shrimp and alligator sausage cheesecake we ordered was served cold and had a horrendous curdled texture. My fried mirliton entree was a complete disappointment, especially for the price, but maybe I expected too much since I had built it up in my mind as something that would equal or surpass my mom's mirlitons from when I was a girl.

On a personal note, I was treated rudely by the staff on a couple of occasions when I stopped in to deliver some of their mail that had accidentally been put in my box. They'd also frequently neglect to bus the glasses from the stairs leading up to my apartment (which people would sit on while waiting for their table), but I guess that's alright since I got some free barware out of it.

Anybody have an opinion on whether Crabby Jack's is any better or at least more reasonably priced?

Yeah, CJ's is both more moderately priced and a little better. But it's a poboy shop, so my expectations are significantly lower. I like the duck poboy...

Just ate at Jacques Imo for the first time. The reservation we had was honored for a party of 5 reasonably promptly. We ate next door, I guess at an annex. The noise level was high, thanks to a party table. The server was pleasant, patient about questions and helpful. The decor is quirky, but I didn't think it would be like Galatoire's. The food was well-prepared, served hot and was well worth the price in terms of quality and quantity. I would definitely give it another try if you had a bad experience once, but it helps to go early or be in a party large enough to get a reservation and avoid a long wait.
