Actually, just back from a visit to Restaurant August about three weeks ago, on Monday night. Part of an annual food trek to New Orleans. We came away from the experience believing this was the hot restaurant of our trip, the restaurant with the buzz about it. The place was full, but tables were not crowded together. We sat in the room beyond the main room, about 8 tables; it was quiet for the meal. The wine list is very good, and we found the wine service attentive, correct and professional.
Beyond that we found some of the dishes at three-star status with their elegant serving, refined flavors exercised with restraint. And the dishes were NOLA foods made special. So we didn't feel we were in an any-city, cosmopolitan restaurant, but experiencing fine dining with Southern hospitality and flavor. In the context of the four day adventure which included dinners at Peristyle, Windsor Court, GW Fins, August, and lunches at Delmonico's, Galatoire's, Cuvee, it was a stand out meal. Of the others mentioned, I'd put August, Delmonico's, Galatoire's, and Peristyle in the top half. But no meal, at any restaurant, was disappointing. Hope you have an equally rewarding experience. WineSmoke.

hands down the best meal that we had on our most recent trip in July--beat out peristyle and NOLA's. I think the post above concerning "restraint" is a very nice way to put it. One was taken care of by waitstaff without stuffiness but also without bustle. We asked the wine steward for a recommendation, stating that we were willing to try the unusual, and had an absolutely incredible wine. Have fun.

Every year my parents go to New Orleans in December for a week or so, and my sister and I use that as an excuse to get them a gift certificate for dinner somewhere there as a Christmas gift. Since I am in California and my sister is in Boston, my research is usually restricted to Chowhound postings, with great success. This year we sent a certificate from Restaurant August and I am thrilled to read these reviews!
Past successes have been Brigstens, Bayona, Stella, and Peristyle. So far, so good!
