Real name is Kurt, but as by forum name implys, I am interested in cheap places not necessarly the best. So, any suggestions as to the cheapest place in town for a meal? Dinner mostly. Appreciate it, because I'm left to feed myself and can't cook.

There's a place on Magazine, Jimmy K's, that I think is just what you're lookin for. Can't vouch for dinner. Have had lunches there that were for the books. Ham hocks and lima beans on a bed of rice, blackberry cobbler! I'm from Detroit so I won't claim to be an expert, but this is one of the greatest neighborhood places I've ever found in N.O. or any other place for that matter. We're talking food, not decor or ambiance. Good luck.

It's called Joey K's, and it's on the corner of Magazine and Seventh Street.

I agree, it's very good for casual and cheap fare.

I second Joey K's, and Tom's list was a good one, too. Here are a few more:
1. Juan's Flying Burrito, on Magazine and also on Carrollton
2. Ted's Frostop, on Claiborne near Calhoun. Lunch specials cost 'round $4.00 and include a tiny little iceberg lettuce salad and bread, too. Set specials for every day of the week.
3. New York Pizza, Magazine St. and on N Carrollton. Thin crust pizza by the slice.
4. Dunbar's, Freret St. Soul food buffet, all you can eat.

And, the best, cheapest, chowhoundish food in New Orleans: the FREE vegetarian food served at the Hare Krishna temple on Esplanade Avenue. After services, the temple ladies cook really good stuff and feed anyone and everyone.

Cafe Reconcile
Dunbars
Juans Flying Burito
Most Neighborhood bars serve red beans on Monday (you should at least spring for a draft beer $1.75)

above are a few that come to mind that are as cheap as Shoney's.

New Orleans is about food, eating and drinking. While I do understand that the poster has limited funds, you can find cheap eats in NO without having to resort to a chain.

I'm sorry, I just thought that this baord was about dining and not about how much you can squeze a nickel.
If your main goal is to pocket the perdiem why not just get a pack of baloney and a loaf of bread. Heck is the bread is a day old, one could eat for days on $3.00

I'm really not trying to get into a tiff here but,
If money is the posters primary concern you can still do much better than Shoney's
Dunbars,
Juan,
Reconcile
All are better than Shoneys and a bargain too.
They fullfil the posters cheapness requirement.

Now No offense to you personally but, shoneys is crap.

I mean really, people are going to ask,"where'd you eat in New Orleans?" the guys gonna say---"Shoney's"

Friends dont let friends eat in chains

Go ahead call me a food snob, I can take it.

:)

There are plenty of very inexpensive places in town with quite good food. Many close at around 5 (like Harbor and Two Sisters, which I will write about after going there a few times, but your choices are still varied after the sun goes down. Here are a few -- Country Flame (Tex-Mex) and Salt & Pepper )Pakistani) on Inberville in the Quarter; Mona's; on the West bank La Puperseria, Pho Tau Bay, Taqueria Mexicana, Taqueria Jalisco, Christy's Po-Boys; Kenner Supermarket on Williams (excellent Central and South American); in mid-city Lola's, Katy's, Boswells (Jamaican) and Landry's. And these are only a few.
