What's a kid supposed to do when the only dining hall on the meal plan makes one's stomach turn? This kid's had all the Snickers bars and chocolate chip cookies a mom can send from home--the kid wants REAL FOOD, and cheap! And walking distance from the dorm at Tulane! Any suggestions other than Popeye's?

Rocky's Gourmet Pizza on Magazine delivers but call them to make sure 891-5152. Also New York Pizza (both places are real good) NYpizza is 891-2376. There's a Foodies right down river from Tulane on St. Charles that has great meals for take-out, full meals, side dishes etc. Caters to people who don't want to cook but want a hot meal.

All of these are walking distance.

FroStop on the corner of Calhoun/Claiborne (past Reily center). Further down Calhoun, you have Bud's Broiler and Kokopelli's. There is a shopping center to the right which includes a Domino's and WingZone.

OR: Walk up Broadway towards St. Charles, take a right on Maple St. On Maple, there is Vera Cruz (Mexican). Keep going on Maple to Carrollton, there is GB's (burger), Camellia Grill (awesome), Hana Sushi, Cooter Brown's, etc. Also a Walgreens/Eckerds and Baskin Robbins.

Foodies Kitchen on St. Charles and Cherokee (i think) -Go up Broadway to St. Charles, and take a right. Great food, complete meals for takeout.

Lastly, Dunbar's on Freret Street (walk towards downtown) - Rough neighborhood, but great soul food.

Takeout places near Tulane:
Roman's Pizza - 866-1166 - great sandwiches/salads.
Cafe Roma:
Favori's:
WingZone
Rocky's:
Reginelli's:

Hope this helps.

You're in a food-rich neighborhood, so you won't starve if you make a little effort...
--Foodies, 7457 St. Charles. Not exactly cheap, but nice source of good cold cuts & breads. Sandwiches are large enough to share with a friend.
--Taqueria Corona, Magazine St between State & Eleonore. Cheap & good. The chicken & black bean burrito is $3.25, and you get free chips/pico de gallo. Can get crowded, but almost always has free seats at the counter. If you walk through the park to Magazine, it's even a scenic journey.
--Franky & Johnny's, Arabella near Tchopitoulas. Might be too far to walk, but you could easily bike it. Go on Mondays for red beans & rice.
--Dunbar's, on Freret (right on the Freret bus line). Buffet lunch, all you can eat. It's the place to go for beans, greens, fried chicken, cornbread.
--Bayou Bagelry, on Claiborne across from campus. Excellent chicken salad, all white meat (no mayo).
--Saucy's on Freret at Lowerline. Used to be Beebo's, still serves big breakfasts. Also serves hot wings, burgers, etc. Pretty cheap.

Now that the weather's cooled off, you can bike to Whole Foods on Magazine. Plus, Res Life offers an occasional weekend shopping shuttle to Winn Dixie & other places like that.

A plethora of places are accessible via the streetcar, too.

Free chips at Taqueria Corona? Well that's a much needed improvement. I black-listed them years ago because of the charge-for-chips policy, which i found ridiculous. Their fish tacos are pretty good, although they can be heavy-handed with the tartar sauce which imparts a decidedly Filet-o-Fish quality to the dish---i ask for it on the side.

The Riverbend/Maple Street has a ton of eateries that are within walking distance.

La Madelene is pretty good, and they give a 10% discount to TU students.

For slightly nicer French, there's Cote Sud on maple.

Jamila's, also on maple, is french-influenced Tunisian, serving excellent tagines and soups.

figaro's serves up-scale pizza (sans red gravy) and other italian dishes, and they have the added bonus of delivery.

Foodies, Langensteins, Whole Foods, and Chez Nous all sell packaged heat-and-eat entrees that you can throw in the microwave or toaster-oven.

And your daughter can also go to any of the on-campus alternatives to Bruff (the Rat, UC caf, etc.) during dining hours and get her meal-credit applied to purchases there---unless things have changed since i was an undergrad. I'm sure there's a web-site somewhere that could explain the Non-bruff policies in their current detail.

On second thought, you're right. TC does charge for chips--maybe it's VeraCruz that offers them for free?

On campus, food services will change dramatically when the UC is closed for renovation in December. They'll be relocated to a temporary building behind Bruff Commons. The Rat will relocate, but I'm not sure where it's going...

I survived my sophmore year on po-boys from Adams St. Deli. Anyone know if that's still there? It's on Adams b/w Oak & Willow. Nothing gourmet, but they had decent and very cheap po-boys.

When I attended Tulane 20 years ago, I got on the meal plan at Loyola. The food at Loyola was very good! I don't know what it is like now, but it is worth checking out. The Loyola cafeteria is closer to many of the academic buildings then the Tulane cafeteria is.
