I am going to a conference next week held at the Doubletree 300 Canal Street. Unemployed, I don't have a bunch of money to spend, but I do want to have good food.

First, I will need to have a place near the hotel to get breakfast each morning (unless I go to the market the first day to stock up on something). Where else might I want to check out nearby for dinner and lunch? Any place good to go get a beer? Get a beer and eat? (I have found information about restaurants in the French Quarter, the Garden District etc) My main goal now is to locate food outside the hotel when I can't stray too far away.

(I tend to order searingly hot foods when possible, so recommendations that include spicy foods would be especially appreciated)

The Doubletree is just across the street from Harrah's casino, so you can always play nickel slots and pick up a few free beers ;)

If price is the primary concern, check out Country Flame on Iberville (cheap and bohemian, filled with lots of interesting characters). Just a few blocks up Common Street is Le Petit Paris, home of a tasty lunch special for less than $6 (search this board for an earlier string on it with a link to a review). Mother's is also just a few blocks away, and they're open for breakfast. Ernst Cafe isn't so far, and it's good for beers/bar food. Any number of fast food joints can be found on Canal St as well. Canal Place shopping mall (across the street from the hotel) has a Starbucks and a food court, too. Johnny's Poboys has a CBD outpost (on Natchez? Union?), and Lulu's is also inexpensive and very good.

You'll be in the heart of the business district downtown, so you definitely won't go hungry.

Here are some good, inexpensive places to eat lunch and dinner within walking distance of your hotel:

In the French Quarter:
Napoleon House for half a muff
Johnny's Po-Boys
Mena's Palace, now relocated on the 300 block of Chartres -- good plate lunches and maybe breakfast
Bacco for lunch with their $10, 2 course lunch
The Country Flame, as previously noted
Salt & Pepper -- ridiculously cheap Middle Eastern fare
Acme Oyster House

In the CBD (all lunch places)

Le Petit Paris
Jambalaya Shoppe (very good gumbo)
Food Court, 3rd floor of the Bank One building

There is also some new diner concept on the 2nd block of Magazine street. I've heard good reports in terms of value and food, and will supplement this post (if someone doesn't find the name first).
