Mr.B's shrimp are indeed good. I like the BBQ shrimp at Mosca's (but they're way overpriced, IMHO), and even the version at Pascale's Manale (but the shrimp are too big). Honestly, Gary, with the fisherman receiving only $2/lb for fresh 10-15 gulf shrimp, I can't bear to pay retail for them--I just make the dish at home. Can't even remember the last time I ordered them out. It's so easy to make at home; everybody I know has a favorite personal version (mine includes a little rosemary and a couple of slices of fresh ginger along with the usual stuff).

How can the shrimp be too big? I hate when this dish is made with small/inferior shrimp. I always liked the version at Mr. B's, but when I had it recently, it was not as good as I remembered -- the sauce seemed too sweet and not spicy enough. Many people say Pascal's Manale has gone downhill in recent years, but I've never been disappointed by theitr BBQ shrimp.

I think that anything larger than 10-15 is too big. The really, really big shrimp are often iodine-y, and their flesh can be chewy (too firm, esp when cooked in the shell). Some places make BBQ shrimp with huge shrimp from SE Asia--these aren't nearly as tender or flavorful as our gulf shrimp (perhaps b/c they traveled SO damn far?)

I swear the best bbq'd shrimp are at K-Paul's. I know this is heresy to say this but I've been to Pascal Manale's and about a half dozen other places but K-Paul's, based on a last visit several years ago, was incredible. If you go they also have fresh coconut layer cake on Chantilly whipped cream which is the best I have ever had anywhere on earth. But you MUST special order this.
