What do people think? I know it drew raves when it first opened, but I have begun to hear mixed reviews in the recent weeks. Is it still worth fighting the mob for a reservation?

I have had no problem getting reservations in the last few weeks, and it remains one of the best and most inventive restaurants in town. But one's enjoyment of places like August depends, in my mind, on understanding from the outset that few of its dishes are classic combinations, the prices are high, and the service is a little stand-offish, like the Windsor Court (as opposed to the more congenial feel of Stella and Brigtsen's). It also the hits speed bumps on occasion. The chili-based soup last week was overpowering, the lobster (with pickled Napa cabbage) was over cooked, and the sea salt crystals on the trio of foie gras looked nice but distracted from the dish.

My Metairie-based mother in law (whose opinion on these matters is certainly worth considering) went to August for her birthday dinner last night and reports that it was first-rate. She had lamb 3 ways and thought it was superb; she thought the service was excellent and friendly. Overall she thinks it remains a contender for the premier restaurant in New Orleans.
