Hi all,

Would love all types of Hound recommendations for New Orleans. Restaurants, bars and shopping, especially thrift stores. Give me your best of lists of all types! Thanks, everyone.

While hardly an expert, I've been a couple of times (from NYC), the last of which was a carefully planned food orgy.
I wrote a detailed account here.
www.eatmenyc.com click on New Orleans link in left-hand frame.

The aquarium is very cool.

before we went to Jazzfest this year i read a post on this board about Lillettes(3637 Magazine st.). All the poster said was "Oh, my god." So right, absolutely the best. In the Garden district. Also for quick, unique and awesome burgers try Port of Call on Esplanade near the quarter. the best burgers ever. the only thing about New Orleans is they don't do beer there. Even the brewery (Crescent City) had mediocre to lousy beers. Ugleshci's is great, cheap too. Mr. B's has terrific bbq shrimp. there is also a place on Feret st (uptown I think)called Dunbars that has an all-you can eat menu for cheap. Ribs, Chicken, redbeans and rice, all authentic and well prepared. the Brennan family has many restaurants that are great. We went to Brennan's for brunch and were blown away. Eggs benedict and Bananas Foster, flambe'd at our table. Pricey though ($38.00). One thing about NOLA is that people smoke cigarettes everywhere, constantly. Coming from California this takes some getting used to and really creates (at times) an unpleasant dining experience. Be prepared. Also if you are in the Quarter at dinner time don't be taken in by the restaurant that has a hustler outside. As a rule (in any city) there is a reason there is no business at this restaurant.

Of course, the beer does not suit every taste, but you might try an Abita Amber (or simply "Amber") while there. Others like Abita Turbodog. If you're a real weird-o (which is a good thing), try Abita Purple Haze.

Abita comes from the north shore area, up above the lake.

I like it. Now that I live in NYC, getting it poses a problem. (But they do have it at the cheezy bar in Forest Hills...)

 The Bulldog
 Lager's
 Cooter Brown's

New Orleans has a huge beer scene. Crescent City Brewery is a tourist trap. For local beer, it's Abita Brewery great selection or Acadian Pilsner from Mid-City.

maybe being a Norcal I am spoiled. I like really large beers, aggressively hopped to extreme. I found the beers in NOLA to be mildly flavored without much umph. In Northern California we have many small breweries (7 in Sacramento alone)and some of the beers brewed in Northern California are the best in the world (Old Rasputin, Jamaica Red, Sierra Nevada etc.). I thought that when we were in a great gastronomic area like New Orleans they would have beers that were as great as the food. We didn't find any. Abita is OK, mildly flavored. Being not from there we would like to know about any beers and breweries that have really outstanding beers. Great Beer, like wine, is a part of the dining experience.

My personal fave is Acadian Brewery in Mid-City. They make a pilsner that is top notch. A new brewery has just popped up on the West Bank of the river called Daze I think. I tried it last week it was very good as well. Abita's seasonal beers are the best that they make. Unfortunately, they are not readily available in most restaurants in town. During the holidays they make a great bock beer. Their Purple Haze is very good as well. My favorite Abita beer is Turbodog though.

I wish we had more micro-brews here as well but sadly we don't. I've noticed everyone neglects Zea's in Clearview. They brew some excellent beers and the food isn't too shabby either.

New Orleans has a multitude of thrift stores, and you can find great things if you spend some time -- partially because of the wealthy Uptown population. Just check the yellow pages for listings and check out whatever's near where you're staying. There is a big indoor flea market on Jefferson Highway, a few blocks west of Clearview, that is open each weekend, and right past that is a big Red, White & Blue thrift store.

For restaurants, just browse through all the postings. Be aware, though, that many (including Uglesich's) close for awhile during the summer, if you're coming soon.

I've been to New Orleans about five times now and reviewed the restaurants I've been to. You can read the specifics at the link I've included. Without much explanation here are some of my favorites things.

NOLA (the restaurant)
Cafe du Monde
Sweet Kathleen's (for the music)
Patout's (also for the music)
Walking tour of the Garden District
Magazine Street (good for shopping or just looking)
the Arts District
