While I'll agree with several of those reasons, I don't get the Archie MacPhee thing. I used to live right behind there, and really, tried going their two or three times and never figured out the appeal.

On the other hand, Salumi seems like it belongs on the list. And I'd add something about good oysters and Penn Cover mussels.

[You must have missed the Halloween costume part of my message.] But also because they're fun! Because you never know when someone might need to put a few glow-in-the-dark cockroaches inside someone else's lampshape when they're not looking, so that when the other person turns the lamp off he or she sees glowing bugs inside the shade!

Because everyone, including you, Bunny, needs a good stupid giggle every so often.

I'm sure there are places you enjoy that I wouldn't be able to appreciate. I consider Archie McPhee a national treasure, but it helps if you were weaned on Mad Magazine, like I was.

And to make this about food: After Archie McPhee's, swing by Ballard Ave for a German beer at People's Pub and La Carta de Oaxaca for great posole and mole.

No doubt there are plenty of things I'd find quite lovely that others wouldn't get, but, really, I'm stumped. I've never understood what the point of buying something like a rubber chicken is. Or a boxing nun. I'm not trying to be a pain, I really just don't quite understand what could impel someone to spend money on something with no discernible use like that.

And I'll say that should you find yourself completing your rubber chicken purchase at an hour that seems somehow a bit inappropriate for a beer, Cafe Besalu for coffee and pastry is as good a reason as any to make the trek all the way out to Ballard.

I'm sorry, but that list is just so unbearably lame. Half the items are essentially redundant and the picture they have, labled "Dungeness crabs" is actually of blue crabs.

Which "Asian District" are they referring to exactly? At least the restaurants they list under "Where to Splurge" aren't offensive, but who the hell ever goes to Shuckers?

I know what you mean about Shuckers but don't write it off too quickly. It's a block away from my office so I have recently "discovered" it. Hubby and I went there for dinner one night before the symphony and had a great meal of seafood and martini's. They have wonderful homemade crackers (flatbread) that they serve with sweet butter and sea salt. Yum. Then I met some friends there for lunch (their choice) and I had a wonderful seafood salad. But my friend had one of the best things I have had in Seattle. House alder smoked oysters on the half shell. We were all blown away by how good they are. I made a mental note to go back for cocktails and oysters.

And just when we were starting to agree on everything ;)
