Mosca's in Avondale

If you drive out of New Orleans by crossing the Huey P. Long and head west about 3 miles on 90 in Avondale you come to a spot on the left called Mosca's. Its a small white building. Be sure to stop for some super Italian dishes that are out of the ordinary. These are not your typical pasta and tomato sauce Italian. There are only about 20 tables in the place and they accept reservations during the week, but not on weekends, when you have to stand in line.
The crab salad has what tasted like their own Italian dressing and was very tasty, although the local we went there with was disappointed since he felt the quantity of crab in the salad was not what he had seen before. They have a chicken dish I believe was called Chicken Grande and it was excellent. It was a whole chicken cut up and roasted in olive oil, garlic, rosemary and white wine to a beautiful mahogany color. The whole cloves of roasted garlic along with the oil in the platter, made for excellent bread dipping.
Another dish we had was the sausages with roasted potatoes. They make their own sausages and the meat is ground up fairly fine with seemingly very little fat, although they were not dry at all. They were accompanied by a whole roasted potato cut in half which was sprinkled with some herbs.
The dishes are very simple, without any trimings, but really good. They have quite a few wines both by the bottle and the glass. The latter actually being highhball glasses instead of wine glasses. No fancy Riedel stemware here - kind of an old school Italian touch.
This is a really great place and should not be missed. Be sure to bring cash since they do not accept credit cards.
