I am looking for your standard kid's birthday sheet cake for Rachel's 1st next month. I want it decorated with a puppy theme. I went to Rainbow and all they had was marketing things (scooby doo, sponge bob, etc.). I don't want to go somewhere ridiculously expensive, and I would prefer to stay in the St. Paul area.
And yes, I know she probably won't even recognize that they are puppies, but I stubbornly forge ahead with the puppy theme.

I say stick to your guns and hold out for the right decoration!

Wuollet Bakery does great decorated cakes - at least, they did a few year ago, and I bet they still do.

For my mom's 70th birthday, we consulted with the head decorator and got an amazing cake with a woman playing a french horn (she's a musician) with a black lab and a frog at her feet. Plus a tent in the background. Everyone is still talking about this cake years later.

I'll bet they could do a good puppy cake in their sleep. And they're conveniently located on Grand at (?) Lexington (I think - I'm not good with cross streets).

my concern about Wuollet, and maybe this makes me a bad mommy, is the price! I had thought about it, and I will look into specifics.

Wuollett definately has the best cakes, but they can be spendy. There's online ordering now - so you can at least get an idea for pricing in advance.

Another option would be to get an individual sized puppy cake for the kiddo, and another "regular" cake for everyone else.

If you could possibly go with rubber duckies and not puppies for the theme you can get a FREE sheet cake at Byerly's in Roseville. Bring your child's birth certificate when you order and the $23.00 cake is yours for free!! Both my daughters used this service recently and for a FREE cake it was delicious.

wow, that is a great tip! We will have to seriously consider that. Maybe we will just tell her all about duckies starting today and hope she will grow fond of them. Puppies shmuppies.

or buy toy puppies and place them on the cake with cut-up green plastic cups underm them (the "park", or something to that effect for the kid's mind). I betcha that Rachel would prefer if the puppy is NOT edible - the little ones always freak out when the best part of the cake is cut up in pieces!

Jerabek's (on the West side of St. Paul)makes wonderful b-day cakes. Just last year I recieved an elaboratly decorated and delicious cake. And I believe the taste of their cakes is MUCH better than the taste of Woullet's salty cakes and more affordable.

PLUS, they did a wonderful 1st birthday cake for my friend's child and even threw in a special mini cake just for the 1 year old! It was so much fun to watch him stick his head in his very own cake.
