My husband and I are looking for a new Mexican place in KC. Perhaps something very authentic. I have been a huge Manny's fan in the past but would like a change. We live in Lee's Summit and hate all the Mexican places here except El Maguey which is just OK. I HATE Margarita's with a passion so please don't mention it. YUCK!! No chains. Rudy's, Los Corralos, Ponak's, Maya Bistro, Panzone's, Baja 600 and Mi Cocina are all decent but not what I am craving.

Anything good on the Blvd? Anywhere else in the city? We are willing to drive for good food.

Thanks,
D

Aside from the link below, la cucina del puerco is one of my favorites. 93rd and Metcalf.

We like La Cucina as well... I would only get the carnitas though... they are the best thing on the menu. Fun atmosphere too!

Los Tules at 17th and Broadway is pretty good, and actually, I really like Pancho's the 24-hour place at 34th and Main- both KCMO. They make their own tortillas and their carne asada burrito is just like you would get in California.

There are a few places on 7th street near downtown KCK that are pretty authentic - tacos al pastor, etc, as well as the tacos at Bichelmeyer's meats on 7th street - north of I-35 - only available on Saturdays for lunch. 4 tacos for 5 dollars, and only tacos, nothing else (at least cooked).

just a few suggestions.

I have to disagree about la cucina del puerco - not very good. The better choice at 91st & Metcalf, on the Northwest corner, is La Mesa.

Taqueria Mexico is really good and really authentic, there are two of them on SW Boulevard, one on Indep. Ave. in Independence and one on Kansas Ave in KCK (close to 7th street). The ones on SW Blvd are my favorites. I love the food there, really authentic mexican including a lot of things not on usual tex-mex menus (like nopalitas (cactus) and tacos lenguas (tongue), my favorite dish is the mexico special, slice of any meat with cactus, stewed beans, avacodo, usually there are a lot of hispanic people eating there which is always a good sign when looking for good mexican food ps: always ask your waitress for the 'hot sauce' some times they don't bring it right out for 'gringos', but if you ask they are happy to bring it). Laura's in KCK is also good and really authentic, it is in KCK on State Ave I think. They have large menu with lot of authentic food and really good soup. have only been there a couple of times, they speak mostly spanish there so be prepared. Someone else mentioned the tacos on 7th street at El Camino Real, they have good tacos al pastor, sliced right off of the spit that hangs in the window....these places are all good and all very authentic. Good luck!

Just had some tacos al pastor at El Camino Real, and they were terrific. Sliced off the spit, as zeke says, crisped and heated nicely on the griddle, a little pineapple cut off the top with your pork, griddled also, and really wonderful fresh-made corn tortillas.

I'll definitely be back here, though I hadn't seen this bost and look forward to exploring the other recs as well.

Dos De Oros
13029 Holmes Rd
Kansas City, MO 64145
(816) 942-0020

You know when you're tired, hungry, coming home from work, don't feel like cooking but don't want to spend a lot of money but want something good...you want to go to "The Place" and Dos De Oros fits the bill. Though El Maguey in Columbia, MO seemed a little bit better, this little place in south Kansas City/Martin City earns the rep in my book as "The Place" Plus they haven't been grumpy when we show up at 8:40pm and they close at 9pm.

Caveat: they don't have a liquor license. The 2 times I went, they say they're going to get one next week. While I don't need to have a beer everytime I eat out, it would be nice to have the option. I've crossed off a few places that didn't serve alcohol. This place is that good :P
