Has anyone been to Small Plates in Detroit lately? Was thinking of going there on Sunday and wanted to know of others' recent experiences.

I've been to Small Plates several times and am always happy with the food, service and atmosphere. I would recommend a reservation if you are going Friday or Saturday, or if there is a show at the Opera House...

I did go to Small Plates on Sunday afternoon before a show at the Opera House and had a really nice meal. I did make reservations though they weren't necessary. The veggie spring rolls were delicious and the margherita pizza with balsamic vinagrette tomatoes was very good, too. We also tried the tuna melt wrap with fries and homemade ketchup and mayonnaise and enjoyed that as well. I would definitely go back.

i just had lunch at this place on monday and was not too impressed. what we had: (1) fries (2) petite tenderloin (3) garlic shrimp (4) margherita pizza (5) lettuce wraps. all of these dishes, save the fries, were on the bland side. the handcut fries were the high point of the meal, which says something. i will say that the desert of pecan ice cream sandwiched between chocolate chunk cookies and topped with chocolate sauce was quite good. one of my dining companions had eaten there before and said that the food both times were less than exceptional. i also found that for a small plates place, there were very few specials. i will try any place twice, but i am not itching to repeat here. perhaps my experience was marred by my expectation that this was a tapas place, which it is not.

Small plates is the kind of place I really wanted to fall in love with, The location is great, the atmosphere up-scale-ish enought but not stuffy at all. we happened to be there on a very nice warm September evening, so the outdoor dining option was available. Like I said, it has a lot going for it, but the food is only mediocre.

The pastry sampler, on the other hand was memorable only because it was so comically bad. If memory serves, it was a couple Chips A-Hoy cookies, some heavy piecrust in a creceant shape, a piece of dry lemon cake and some other assorted nic-nacks. Lame. Especially after the gushing recomendation of the waiter....We had a nibble of each, laughed about it and gave up.

Yeah, I've had the same experience. Food is pretty basic, but the sidewalk seating is delightful and the general atmosphere well done. Have some wine or beer, order just enough food to go with it, and enjoy.
