Will be doing day trip this weekend or next to Amish country in NE Ohio. Looking for EXCEPTIONAL fried chicken for lunch or dinner. Been to the Der Dutchman restaurants, they are OK, not great. Looking for smaller, more intimate place that doesn't feed 500 people at once. Willing to go off the beaten path. Want great sides too like homemade mashed potatoes, sweet corn & corn bread or biscuits and homemade fruit pies. Thanks!

I have never associated Amish restaurants as serving great fried chichen. And I am not sure that this one serves fried chicken at all. However, the food is pretty good and their is a wildlife sanctuary right. And it is a small restaurant in a small town in Wooster County.

Der Essenhaus is quite good, but it doesn't serve the usual friend chicken. Their chicken is what is known as broasted. It is braised in vegtables and then roasted to get a final crusty coating. It's much less greasy than the usual friend chicken but it is not true "Southern fried chicken". The Amish are German immigrants and the cuisine tends to reflect this. There is Mrs.Yoders kitchen on RT-241 that is in Mt Hope that is very popular with the locals. Berlin and Sugarcreek are very popular with tourists but the food is average and the prices tend to reflect the tourist market. To find the best places, I would suggest that you get a Wayne-Holmes county map and get off the main roads and look for the local places away from the tourist highlights. If you are going to be in the area in the summer, don't forget to take advantage of the road side produce stands. The prices are usually very good and most of the products were picked that morning and are usually organically grown. I hope this helps. Enjoy your trip.

It is not Wooster County -- it is Wayne County. Wooster is the county seat.

You're going to be passing by what may very well be the best fried chicken in Ohio. It's at Clark's in Jacksontown on U.S. 40, some 25 miles east of Bexley.

Yes, Michael, we have eaten numerous times at Clark's. It's justified after an afternoon walking around the Arboretum, a few minutes north on Rt. 13. We don't feel as guilty eating the yummy pie if we have exercised.

I remember going to a place in amish-country years ago called (I think) Katie Huber's Country Kitchen.
I swear, they killed the chicken right then and there.
Delicious. I wonder if it is still around.

Wanted to thank Kelli for the recommendation for Mrs. Yoder's Kitchen. It is much smaller than the usual Der Dutchman places and not much in way of decorations but the food was really yummy. They had the usual chicken buffet lunch for $9.95 pp (doesn't include dessert) but with a few speacial treats. The silver dollar sized potato pancakes were truly yummy, not something we have seen before and the chicken was very, very good. DH really enjoyed it too. This is truly off the beaten path and you have to pay attention because the signage isn't good. We knew we were in for a treat because there were several buggies and horses hitched up in the parking lot. Go and enjoy!!
