Tips for Dining, Eating and Food Shopping in the Midwest

Vegetarian/Vegan dinner in Madison, WI

Some friends and I will be heading through Madison on our way to New Glarus next month. We've got 1 vegan and 2 omnivores in our pack. None of us have had Laotian before, so we don't know if it is veggie/vegan friendly. Is it?

If not, what are some good dinner options for us? We love ethnic food and "local" flavors, and price is not an issue.

Thanks!

  1. The laotian cusine in madison in certianly veggie friendly. I don't know if you were planning on going to Lao Laan Xang (spelling?), but at both of their locations, not only are there multiple vegetarian options, they will make most dishes with tofu and/or vegetables if you request it.

Another great veggie option is an Indonesian restaurant called Bandung. The food there is great and they make their own tempeh that is really flavorful and delicious.

    Enjoy!

That is the Laotian I was thinking of. Thanks for the Indonesian suggestion as well. I'll throw this past my group and see what they think. I haven't been to Madison in about 8 years, so I'm really grateful for your help!

You might also want to try Nepalese food. I've read that there are only five Nepalese restaurants in North America (I don't know if that's true or not...), and two of them are on the 300 block of State St.

Himal Chuli has been around for many years; it has an informal and "authentic" feel. Chautara is more upscale. Both have good food, with many vegetarian selections.

    2. Himal Chuli is the worst restaurant I have ever visited. There were at most 20 people to two servers and it took 30 minutes to get drinks and over an hour to get food. The food itself was the kind of thing that college sophomores who grew up on Arby's make when they are learning to cook and experimenting with vegetarian "ethnic" food. The American server was unable to operate the cash register or tabulate the bill on paper using simple mathematics and defensively burst into tears, saying that math was not her best subject in school. Me and my group remained polite but this is the only time in my life I have not tipped because we were overcharged $12 and it would have taken another half hour to get the server's attention and explain this to them. The portrait of the Dalai Lama on the wall was weeping tears of yak's milk at the sheer crappiness of this place.
