Taste of Thailand in St Paul...

Flybottle Jan 29, 2005 01:30 AM

It sucks. Am I wrong? I've been there now thrice and each time the thing was mild even though I asked for FIVE LIONS--that is, hot hot hot hot hot. And when I ask for something to hotten it up, I get crushed red pepper (a la the pizza joint) and only crushed red pepper. And good lord, the #60 (Chicken Laab) tasted like spicy cat food. Yuck.

Incidentally, since we're on the subject of thai food, am I right that chicken at a thai restaurant is universally a mistake? Those so and so's cook the #%*& out of chicken so that it resembles a flavorless beef jerky. I suppose that gives meaning to the existence of peanut sauce, but if that's so then the existence of peanut sauce is no less contrived than the alleged existence of original sin.

I have friends who swear by Taste of Thailand, but I suspect that's because they live right down the street. So it's like defending your turf. I'm happy to say, though, that there's nothing really good to eat in uptown which wasn't also cooked by me.

Incidentally, I paid for the cat food laab even though I didn't eat it and then went to Pho Ca Dao. In my humble estimation, though it's tasty and you can get an extra large pho, the pho itself isn't in any clear way superior to the pho at Quang. It's no worse, of course, but I hardly see it at as laying an unproblematic claim to "best pho in the twin cities".

    Yep, you are wrong.

you are more than wrong. This place is a staple of the Midway, and I go out of my way to eat here every time I'm in town. The Pinapple Chicken Fried Rice is perfectly sized, sweet, and tasty. The "Cream Cheese Puffs" are elegant simplicity with the sweet and sour (sweet) sauce.

I'll second your nod on Quang, but I really like Taste of Thailand too.

Is this the same place that just opened a restaurant in downtown Minneapolis? I can't find it using the search function but people were complaining about that Thai restaurant also.

I like Pho Ca Dao way way WAYYYY better than Quang. But it's fine if you like Quang better - then I won't have to wait for a table at Pho Ca Dao.

Is Tast of Thailand one of my favorites? No. Would I recommend it over other Thai places in the area? No. But I think it's going a little far to say it sucks. Or at least that the food sucks (although spicy cat food does sound pretty gag-inducing!). In my experience there are plenty of satisfying (if uninteresting) dishes to be eaten there. The service does suck though - that's what keeps me away when I have a choice!

Regarding the chicken/Thai food question, I think you're wrong. Where else have you been eating?

The DT Minneapolis location is now open. I had lunch there today. It's a nice room. They are going to have a bar as soon as the liquor license goes through. I've never been to the St. Paul locations but the food is good. The Pad Thai was actually a little spicy and had a nice amount of basil. The beef and peanut curry was good too. This is certainly a good addition to DT mpls. Something between a expense account restaurant and a lunch-only place.

I'm glad it's open! What is the exact address/intersection?

I love the food from ToT, but the service at the St. Paul location is terrible, and over the past few years the quality of the food has been uneven. We usually get takeout from the Fridley location, and the food is consistently excellent.

We all do recognize that the original post is from 2005, right?

Yes, absolutely, that part is new. Just so long as we don't expect much of a dialogue on the OP's comments.
