I found that I can get a pretty cheap round trip ticket to Detroit and I have always wanted to visit Zingermans. I am not the greatest driver in the world so how is the best way to get from the Detroit airport to Ann Arbor? I have noticed too that Zingermans has several locations-where would I go to find the bread, cheeses and olive oils?

Ask at the car rental for directions to westbound I-94. Drive on 94 for about 20 minutes, you'll pass Ypsilanti and soon after that you go north on 23, it's a big cloverleaf intersection. Then there will be four exits to choose from that lead to Ann Arbor, depends on what lodging arrangements you make.

You want to go to the Detroit St. store on the corner of Kingsley for the bread and cheese and oil; check out the vinegar while you're at it.

Do me a favor when you go to Zingerman's and have a pastrami special -- on rye with melted swiss cheese and sauteed onions. It is the best pastrami sandwich and one of the best sandwiches I have ever had anywhere. After eating if you can think of a better sandwich, I want to know about it. I will try to find a cheap round trip ticket to that city :)

Try the pastrami at the Plaza Deli in Southfield (corner of 12 Mile, Northwestern Highway and Franklin) next to the Star Bakery. An old Jewish deli that I used to go to every weekend as a kid -- had fantastic hot pastrami sandwiches on rye. I was there last week; the quality is still fantastic (for Michigan!)and a sight cheaper than Zimmerman's. Try the #6 which I didn't have but my companion did and raved about the sauce -- it's a pastrami/corned beef combo with some kind of Russian dressing (sounds awful, but really, he raved.)

in case you haven't already come to Detroit, here's how I'd suggest hitting Zingermans straight from the airport.

Take 94 East to State St. (I believe the exit # is 177). Turn right on State Street and take it through campus and past Huron/Business 94. Keep going north on State about 4 blocks to Kingsley. Turn left on Kingsley (there is a large brick church on the corner) Zingermans is two blocks down on the southeast corner of Kingsley and Detroit Street. Parking is a pain, keep circling if neccessary.

This is an easy to follow to route, but not necessarily the fastest. Let me know if you want alternatives.

I know it's way past when you were going... but for anyone else...

If you are going on a weekend and are in a time crunch, call ahead to order (i.e. when you're still at the airport) and skip the sandwich line (which can sometimes be found winding around the block).

I have had many fabulous sandwiches here, once you find one you love it's hard to try another. #13 Sherman's Sure choice (Zingerman’s corned beef, Switzerland Swiss cheese, coleslaw & Russian dressing on Jewish rye bread) is my all time favorite, but I've found a new love, #00 D-$'s Cuban Conundrum
(Niman Ranch roast pork, Arkansas peppered ham, Switzerland Swiss cheese, old-fashioned dill pickles, mayo & hot mustard on a grilled paesano roll). And no, I don't have those memorized I copied them from the website.

Interesting. I cannot say that I've ever actually eaten at Zingerman's, though I've passed by the Road House quite often. For a corned beef sandwich (which yours sounds *completely* right, with the exception of the swiss...no cheese!), I've never had better than the corned beef at the Stage & Co. deli in West Bloomfield on Orchard Lake Rd. a bit south of Maple. It's either the #31 or #32 (I can't remember which), but it's their corned beef on Jewish rye (hands down, the best Jewish rye you'll find) with cole slaw and Russian dressing, accompanied by pickle on the side (I always, always, *always* get new dills).

I'll say it right now so that there aren't any surprises: wait times for a table can be longer than expected, and service can be downright lousy. I have never, *ever* walked away from the Stage feeling that we were given exceptional service. Ever. Exceptional food? Absolutely. Exceptional service? Never. If you go expecting great service, know that you'll be disappointed.

It's not a cheap sandwich by any stretch of the imagination at $11 (last I checked), but it is, by far, the best. Now, if you're intelligent, and you don't happen to live near the Mean Streets of West Bloomfield, Stage and Co. does have some local outlets at a couple mall food courts, if you can believe it, such as Somerset Collection. There, you get the same quality food, and the price of the sandwich is only about $7 when last I was there a couple months back. It's a bargain at that price, believe me.

DANG IT! Now you've got me all salivating for one of these babies...
