My brother and I were drivng from Toronto to Dayton to see the USAF Museum at the Wright-Patterson AFB (by the way, if you have any interest in military aircraft, this is your Mecca). The museum is so extensive that it required us to stay over. We went out after the museum closed looking for chow. There was the usual littany of boring chain restaurants which we bypassed. We did however, come across a place just west of the AFB called 'The Old Hickory BBQ'. It was a sit in/take out type of place. The food and service was good, but it was a bit pricey. I had the chicken and rib combo with wedge fries, and my brother had chicken and a baked potato. If your in Dayton and looking for a delicious, fast food, non-chain restaurant, then check out The Old Hickory BBQ.

this is an old place. my spouse is from dayton and used to go here all the time. she has had bbq all over the states texas/carolinas, etc and gives it good marks, but to be fair admits there is also some nostalgia involved for her. her parents would never go for some reason. there is another branch in town on brown street near the university of dayton campus.

yes wpafb is definately overwhelming and needs two days to see it all if you are an airplane nut. then there are the wright bros sites around town too of course and the neil armstrong museum just north in wapakoneta! on your way home the the lewis/glenn nasa research center in cleveland is also worth a visit.

This is not directly related to your post since I am not commenting on Old Hickory, but I do want to put in a plug for a BBQ place in Dayton and your title will be sure to allow people to find it.

City BBQ in Centerville (on State Highway 48, just south of I-675) does some pretty good stuff. I have lived in Texas and Mississippi, and one of the really great things about this place is that they have different kinds of BBQ and sauce. There is Texas style brisket, Memphis style pulled pork, and some just plain-old-good ribs. The sauces are a sweet KC version, a spicier version of the same (Known as Prairie Fire), a NC vinegar sauce, and even a South Carolina mustard-style sauce (which is a bit too sweet for my taste).

Other good things include the hush puppies and sweet tea.

Some people here in Dayton need to learn about real BBQ, and need to realize that simply putting food over charcoal is not the same thing as BBQ. This place will help to set them straight.
