<content>We don't get enough postings like this, mainly because of the obscenely overblown geographic breadth of this board, for which I deeply apologize (our software won't let us break out lots more boards at this point). If we had a separate Indiana board (for example), people would be more comfortable posting great useful stuff like this. Here's the story:

I got the following email from Leigh Evans, editor of HickoryHusker.com, the site for Indiana High School Basketball (see clickable link at footer):

"Not sure if this would be any value to you as it would certainly be considered obscure to anyone not visiting Indiana. However, I publish a website dedicated to Indiana high school basketball (HickoryHusker.com) Most of the content obviously would have no conection to what you have done. ...But we have one standing page that is unique and one that I thought you might find of interest.

"We call it the 'Hoosier Hysteria Away Game Restaurant Directory.' Basically it is a list of every high school in Indiana followed by a mom and pop type restaurant that is deemed to be they best place to eat before or after a game. Each restaurant had to be nominated by a subscriber and is followed by a rough estimate of the pricing there. Occasionally there might be a multiple listing for some of the larger towns, but in most of the smaller hamlets everyone knows there's only the one 'great' place to eat.

"What follows is the actual text of the page - and again I've had this since 1998 and it is still a work in progress. If you can use any of this, by all means feel free."

The side benefit is that the more hoosier talk we put out there, the more hoosier hounds will be attracted and contribute THEIR tips. End result: nobody ever needs to eat anything undelicious no matter where they ever go and no matter what they crave, amen.

Also, I think the editor of the Hoosier site's reading along.

<content>Here are a couple that I thought could use some improvement:

Quote: Manual - The Slippery Noodle Inn $$

While the Slippery Noodle (http://www.slipperynoodle.com/) is a great Blues bar, I'm not so sure that the food would be what many Hoosier highschool basketball fans from out of town would be looking for.

I would offer up The Fountain Diner (http://www.fountainsquareindy.com/diner.asp) or Peppy Grill (http://www.discoverfountainsquare.com/microsites/merch-peppygrill.htm) both in Fountain Square, just a couple of miles from Manual H.S.. Peppy's is where many of the cops from the local police station eat, always a good sign!

In fact, Fountain Square has a lot of good dining (http://www.discoverfountainsquare.com/explore/explore-main.html) that's just a short drive from Manual.

Shapiro's (http://www.shapiros.com/) is also only a short drive from Manual.

Quote: North Central Indy - Keystone Grill$$$

Keystone Grill (http://www.keystonegrill.com/default.htm) is a very good restaurant, but is also very pricey.

I would add Hollyhock Hill (http://www.hollyhockhill.com/) for outstanding fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, salad and vegetables served family-style.

Dodd's Townhouse (http://www.doddstownhouse.com/index.html) is another place that does great fried chicken and outstanding homemade pies. It's not as close as Hollyhock Hill, but it's still only about a 10-15 minute ride to North Central.

I need to get back to work now, but I'll definitely post some places around Broad Ripple H.S. soon.</content>

<content>Jim, I've lived in Brooklyn for years-and while I'd say we eat pretty well here, there is a severe pie deficit. I tried BLT (for non-NY'rs, a swank place on E57th) primarily because they listed lemon meringue pie on the menu. Needless to say, it was a "deconstructed" lemon tart with a separate meringue cookie...just more proof that regional cuisine lives on and is always worth seeking out (now I want pie with my ice cream.)</content>

<content>I went to college in Goshen, and although i primarily ate breakfast out instead of dinner, the South Side Soda Shop always delivered good sandwiches and a favorite warm bacon dressing spinach salad. For ice cream: the Chief, hands down. Probably closed by basketball season, though.

Olympia Candy Kitchen for lunch: green olive and walnut salad sandwiches. Jimbo's for burgers. And there's lots of good Mexican food around, but haven't been back in a while.</content>

Thanks for the great tips. And please bear in mind that while that site's about basketball, hounds need to eat (several times per day!) in all seasons. Any futher contributions welcome.

<content>There is a small, family run restaurant called Marty's Place that's between Hebron and DeMotte. It's located on the river (I think on River Road, but just ask the locals) that has some very good food and a great view of the river as well. In summer there are hundreds of flowers and plants, plus many bird feeders, so there is always something interesting to see from all the windows in the place, all of which overlook the river. At Christmas, both the outside and inside have thousands of lites and decorations. It can get very busy, but there is a bar, so waiting is fun. Fresh seafood, very pretty views and friendly people--how good is that!</content>

<content>I noticed a couple of errors and would like to make some additions to the list.

In Bloomington, it's Lennie's and it's never disappoints. I also recommend the Uptown Cafe. Lennie's and the Uptown both serve eclectic American fare largely to food-savvy university people and out-of-towners. The chef at Lennie's is a CIA grad; try the pizzas and meal salads. Menus for both places are available online. Lennie's is actually a brewpub - the Bloomington award-winning Bloomington Brewing Co. is next door.

But if I know Hoosier basketball fans (and I think I do, considering that my dad and uncle both coached the sport), the Ladyman's Cafe might be a better bet. It's right down the street from the Uptown but worlds apart. Ladyman's is a family-owned diner serving massive farm breakfasts, chicken fried steak, and beef Manhattan. I'm also a fan of the Irish Lion for pub grub.

One of the recommendations on the west side of Indianapolis, near Ben Davis H.S., should be Major Tooley's, not Major O'Tooley's. Major Tooley, the menu reports, was poisoned while working as a royal taster for the Crown in Britain. I always thought it was an odd name for a restaurant when I worked there as a teenager. Most everything (save the French onion soup) was made from scratch, and the chicken salad sandwiches and spinach salad with warm bacon dressing were big sellers. I believe it's under new ownership now.

Also in Indy, that should be Bazbeaux Pizzaria in Broad Ripple, not Bazbow. They offer a choice of 50+ toppings in what appears to be a former garage. I am also a fan of ToSa Euro Cafe, a downscale sister to the much-missed Tavola di ToSa. ToSa is right on the Monon Trail, a very popular bike path, and offers excellent sandwiches and baked goods.

In Mooresville, the restaurant is Gray Brothers Cafeteria, and is not to be missed. It's extremely popular, and for good reason. The pies alone make it worth the trip - at least a dozen varieties. The fried chicken is a must-try.

Hollyhock Hill and Dodd's Townhouse are both near Broad Ripple and serve some of the best fried chicken in the city, if not the state. The thought of it actually makes it possible to bypass the basket of tiny cinnamon buns that comes before the meal.

I would add Zaharako's downtown ice-cream parlor to the Columbus listings. They serve sandwiches and classic soda fountain drinks - black cows and green rivers. They also have a working 1908 pipe organ.

Visitors to lovely Madison should definitely stop in for a sundae at Mundt's Candies.

<content>Unfortunately the Tosa Euro Cafe went out of business along with Tavola di Tosa. There is a very mediocre gringo-ized (how many ways can we serve refried beans?) Mexican restaurant in there now.

Bazbeaux in Broad Ripple has recently moved across the canal into more upscale digs. I havem't been there since the move.</content>

<content>I have to agree with Moggers. As a Terre Haute South alumna, every time I go home--we go. At Moggers used to be a brewery before prohibition killed the Terre Haute Brewing economy. Across the street is their sister restaurant Stables, which is located in the Brewery's old stable. Stables also has comedy on Thursday nights. Moggers is also good for hitting after Regionals at Hulman Center.

For people going to a game at Terre Haute North games, I would go to Maurizio's and get a 747 Special. This is the pizza I dream about. Cut into squares, not slices, thin crust, and toppings falling off onto your plate. yum.

I was shocked to find out from my parents, that they went to a Japanese restaurant in Terre Haute last night. WHAT?!? Called Ichiban, the grill is the table and the chef does his work in front of you. It has lasted two or three years in a building that has been suicide for a number of restuarants before them.</content>

<content>You have left out Monrovia which is the home of Zydeco's, an amazing cajun restaraunt tucked away in a no-stop-light town. The neighboring rivals, the Eminence Eels, probably have to go to Zydeco's, too, for some of the best food in the state of Indiana. Prices are very reasonable. This eatery is on highway 42 west of Indy. </content>

      <content>Fort Wayne Tips....

Munchie Emporium is closed. Casas is ok, but nothing to write home about. Bandido's is a half-step above Chi-Chi's. I worked the line at the Northcrest Bandidos about 20 years ago.

Snider: Blu Tomato. Run by the same folks that gave Ft. Wayne Catablu.

North Side: Acme Bar has a guy smokin' pork in a big contraption in the parking lot. Good ribs. Next to it is an Arkansas-style BBQ joint in the old Aroma pizza space. About two blocks further east on State Street is The Rib Room.

South Side: Go up Harrison to Power's for the best little grease-bomb burgers in the world.
