Hi all,

We're flying into Chicago next Sunday and driving up to WIsconsin Dells for a few days for some vaca time with family. I was hoping to get around the Milwaukee area to finally try the legendary Kopp's Forzen Custard, but we are not landing at O'Hare intil midnight and then hi-tailing it to Wrigley Field Thursday morning after our WD visit for an afternoon game. We are familiar with Culver's (and like it!) but are there any other places to check out while in and around Wisconsin Dells that would be an alternative to Kopp's?

Also, any other great chow finds in and around Wisc Dells is appreciated...nothing fancy, just good casual food that will feed a group of 15 from age 1 to 75! If there is any great pizza place (thin or thick) or a great italian beef sandwich to be found, that's a plus!

No custard to speak of in the Dells. There have been a few recommendations in the past for food so do a search and your bound to find something. I suggest Monk's Bar. Great burgers and fries. Plus they serve spicy mustard along with the ketchup.

There was a post a few weeks ago on the Dells. There is a new pizza place called Moosejaw, I have not tried it yet, but I did ask a local where to get a good pizza and she suggested Dominios. So I would stick to Chicago for pizza. For family , R Place has pretty good Italian food, family style unlimited soup and salad, Rivers Edge is a nice log cabin restaurant with a wall of fish tanks to keep the kids busy. And Ravina is a nice casual indoor/ outdoor place right on Lake Delton across from the water show. For desserts, The Cheese Factory is very good , we had 20 people in the Dells and preordered a great strawberry cake and took it to our rental home for dessert after our BBQ. Skip the all you can eats. And have fun!

Kim and Sven,

Thanks for the suggestions so far. You have both mentioned places where we dined 2 years ago...Moosejaw (had just opened and didn't have full menu yet), Ravina (nice place...casual but decent food and not too $$$), Monk's (lunch before the drive back to Chicago) and The Cheese Factory...my family was reluctant to go there but everyone really loved it, especially my vegetarian sister and my mom!

A couple of other posters have mentioned Bonnie's Bistro (formerly Pizza Port). Anyone have any info/review?

Also, in the past we have had "nice" dinners at Fields in the Wilderness and Del-Bar. Both proved to be disappointing...Fields was out of a bunch of things and was a bit too stuffy for us (a family of 12 ranging from 1-74) and Del-Bar (where we used to go as kids with my parents 30+ years ago) seemed to be way overpriced. Someone mentioned Newport Steakhouse just E of WD...anyone else been and is it worth a visit? How are prices?

Bob,
No I haven't been to Newports yet, but plan to. Also would like to check out a new place called Riverwalk Pub that received good reviews and as a great view. Check out this web site www.ratethedells.com . Hope it helps.

Ok the only frozen custard is Culvers and there are 2 in the area. Both have different flavor of the days.
Uno's pizza just opened around the hwy 12 and 90-94 thats about the best pizza around. The River walk in the downtown Dells has a good location but the food is the Sysco pre pkg food stuff yuck
a new place for lunch is a upstairs spot on Broadway called the High Rock Cafe grreat sandwiches and salads had there crab cakes for dinner the other night yummm. They will be starting dinner entres soon. Really, try the Newport Steak House I posted that and am still happy with the food there but not the friday night fish thats the only disappointment. Moose Jaws beer is real good have never ate there cuz its just to big. Oh and the original Monks burgers are only served at the Chalet bowling lanes they are the original and the best in town. Monks serve frozen burgers and the chalet serves fresh ground burger. big difference. Have fun
