I always thought the South City Diner on South Grand was something like a Courtesy Diner. I have read in reviews that it is a bit more upscale than that. Has anyone ever eaten there? I think it is a more comfort food than haute cuisine. Thanks!

I haven't been there in a few years. I have always thought of Courtesy as a breakfast place, anytime, any shape you're in. South City is all about comfort food. Mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, meat loaf, etc. Like its supposed to be.

Menu-wise, they're roughly equivalent, although Courtesy is considerably cheaper. In fact, I'd say it's the cheapest place in the city to eat. Ambiance-wise, Courtesy has a kind of seedy Waffle House feel, whereas SCD is a bit more upscale. Biggest difference is that South City has a full bar, so if you're ever wondering what it'd be like to wash your short stack down with a martini, South City Diner is the place for you.

South City also plays a continuous stream of terrific oldies (60's mostly, I think). That certainly adds to the ambience.

Their breakfast menus might have something in common-with eggs how couldn't it? But the similarity ends there. I imagine Courtesy doesn't have italian sausage, feta cheese, or field greens in their pantry.
