Hi, I will be in Lawrence from April 29 to May 6th. I would love to know a few Don't miss them places to eat dinner. Also a great steak place would be wonderful. Any help you can give me would be appreciated.

Pachamama's New World Cuisine - they work with a lot of the local growers and their food has always been terrific when I've visited.

Free State Brewing Co. - if you happen to get a hot day, try their Cyclist Ale. Very refreshing! On Massachussetts (Mass Street, the main drag through downtown)

Yellow Sub has some inexpensive and very tasty sub sandwiches. I like the one in the campus area.

Teller's does upscale Italian and I'm never disappointed there. It's an old bank building on Mass St. Interesting interior and be sure to visit the bathroom!

El Mezcal for generous portions of some pretty darned good Mexican food, and a lot of my friends like La Parilla, too.

Mass Street Deli - fun to get away from it all by dining upstairs.

Gotta go to Paradise Cafe on Mass St. for breakfast!

Wheatfield's Bakery Cafe - outstanding breads and really good meals, too.

Definately Free State. I think Paradise is closed, unfortunate because I'll really miss the hobo eggs with hot sauce on em.
Also, check the Lawrence Journal World website. They ran a story on an Mexican place in a gas station that I think is on 6th street. They gave it a glowing review and I would like to try it. Bambinos is good for Italian, I was a cook there way back when, when it was the Cornocopia, fun times.

Paradise Cafe is pretty good comfort food BUT La Familia is a MUST! One of the best mexican restaurants I've ever been to. Guacamole, spinach enchiladas, pork colorado... even the chips and salsa are first rate with 3 kinds of salsa to choose from... It's also mexican-owned, in a funky building from the 1800's. Much better than the mexican joints in N. Lawrence IMO.

La Prima Tazza is a nice coffee shop and one of the few anywhere to have 100% Kona beans usually in stock. Get a large Kona french press and share...

Freestate Brewery is a must!!! (on Mass around 6th) Excellent food, lots of variety, best beer in town! (and scotch, if you're into that)

La Parilla on Mass is great Latin American food...amazing Orchata and fried plantains with black bean dip.

Shaylor's restaurant at the Eldrige hotel (across the street at an angle from Freestate)is supposedly very good, and they do a big brunch buffet on at least Sunday's...maybe Saturday's too. The bar at the Eldrige (the Jayhawker) is the best. Not overrun with college students, bartenders who know their drinks, great environment.

Rudy's Pizza!!! They have the best pizza sauce known to man. It's on Mass too.

The Orient...good, cheap, Vietnamese food (at about 10th and Mass)

Others you could look up in the phonebook (sorry...I don't always know streetnames, just how to drive or walk there! many are right off of Mass):
Wheatfield's Bakery...yummy
La Familia...pretty good Mexican food, variety of salsas to choose from for your table

Hope it helps!

1. Free State Brewery really is a must...it's Lawrence to a T...or at least what Lawrence has become in the last 15 years (which, don't get me wrong, is generally for the better). Monday nights bring the beer special. Their black bean quesadillas are, fairly, renowned. Try the cheddar ale soup. The fish and chips are first-rate. Frankly, it's hard to go too wrong there, and you could go there several times.

2. For steak, I don't really have an outstanding place to recommend, but there are decent options. The safest bet is Hereford House (6th and Wakarusa).

3. Speaking of 6th and Wakarusa, try out West Side Deli. Quality pastrami, delicious salads, can't really go wrong with anything there (except the meat loaf, which sucks).

4. Do one pizza meal at Rudy's (7th and Mass.) and one at Papa Keno's (11th and Mass.). Differing styles, equally stoned help, delicious pizza at both.

5. Aladdin Cafe (10th and Mass.) has better Middle Eastern food than could be reasonably expected in a town the size of Lawrence. It could hold its own anywhere. Go on a Friday night and pray they have the lamb shank special.

6. La Parrilla (7th and Mass.) serves pretty unique Latin American food. Call them and see when they're doing the feijoada special, and go that night.

7. Vermont Street BBQ isn't re-opened in their new location (where Paradise used to be) just yet, and they probably won't be before you get here, but such is life.

8. Pachamama's is quite good, and if you're willing to shell out for it, it's delectable and interesting. Or, do as I do, and go only when your dad is paying for it.

9. An underrated part of the Lawrence dining scene, if you ask me (and, obliquely, you did), is Jade Indian Grill at 15th and Kasold. it's a buffet, and it can be a little depressing being the only person there, but the food is great and a good value...in my opinion, a welcome change from what India Palace does (standard Northern Indian -- 10th and Mass.).

10. Finally, and right next to India Palace, is Pochi Tea Station. Go there...it's one of my highest recommendations. Delicious, cheap, pan-Asiany kinda stuff.

I'm sure I'm missing something...

I agree with the beer rec of Free State but haven't ever been a fan of their food.

El Mezcal, La Tropicana (in north Lawrence) with La Familia a close third (I think La Fam are some of Jessie del Campo's offspring from La Trop).

Paradise is, sadly, closed. Going to Johnny's for a burger will cheer you up, though.

Tellers has never let me down, either.

For steaks and ribs, Don's Steakhouse is a Lawrence institution; grey shingled roadhousey kind of joint on K-10 east of town. If you're a little more adventurous, consider the North Star Steakhouse just east of Topeka -- 24-ounce porterhouse, hand-cut fries with homemade gravy.

ChileheadMike -- I miss the "Corno" greatly; curious when you cooked there?

I worked there for about 3 years in the early to mid 80s. No other place like it, ever, anywhere. I've been to Bambino's and other than maybe being a little cleaner it doesn't seem to have lost its charm.
