My Italian family has this tradition to eat gnocchi every month on the 29th. I usually make them at home (not every month), but I was wondering if there are any restaurants that offer GREAT gnocchi in the Cities. Suggestions?

I had great gnocchi at Chet's Taverna on Raymond/University in St. Paul. You might also want to call Broder's Pasta Bar (south Minneapolis on Penn/France)--I don't remember seeing it on the menu, but they make many wonderful homemade pastas.

Call the i Nonni restaurant in Lilydale area. It's new and has very authentic food. I had oxtail stew there one night, the kind of thing you don't see on menus at most Italian restaurants. It's beautiful and has a really classy shop selling Italian wines in the adjoining room and a gourmet food shop in yet anoher room. The whole thing is the reincarnation (with add ons) of the old Buon Giorno Italian market that used to be under the freeway at the terminal eastern end of University ave. in St. Paul. If you have trouble finding the restaurant phone number, just call Buon Giorno Italian Marketplace and they'll connect you. Can't say for sure if they have gnocchi but they are my most likely bet and if they do, I'm sure it would be authentic and very good. Good luck.

Mari,

Head to La Grolla on Selby Avenue in St. Paul. The homemade pastas are what to order here, and the gnocchi is incredible.

Care to divulge your recipe for homemade gnocchi? I love to cook at home on Sunday afternoons. I'm so tired of the vacuum packed version. I disguise it well though in a creamy Maytag Blue sauce, then browned under the broiler with some breadcrumbs, parmesan and fresh rosemary on top. Comfort food extraordinaire!

Paul Bertolli's new book Cooking By Hand has a solid description of his grandmother's potato gnocchi that is hard to improve upon. They freeze well for a week or so. There's also a cover article in an old issue of Fine Cooking on Bertolli's gnocchi method.

In MSP I'd try Chet's. Is Giorgio still running his empire. If so he'd probably do a decent version.

It's been ages, so they might not still do it well, but I remember having decent Gnocci at Giorgio's on Hennepin.

Brad, thanks for the La Grolla tip. I'll go soon.
