Smokey's is an appealing little red-brick roadhouse on the north side of US Hwy. 20 in Furnessville, which apparently is a hamlet abutting the Indiana Dunes national and state parks between Chesterton and Michigan City. The restaurant is about nine years old, the building much older. Smokey's was out of my first two choices, smoked turkey and red beans and rice, but the chicken breast sandwich and side of cole slaw were good enough. The long and thick but tender chicken breast came on Texas toast, and as soon as I put bbq sauce on the sandwich (four different squeeze bottles of sauce are offered: very mild, mild, hot, and wildfire), the toast dissolved, but the help was congenial, I was at a picnic table by myself, a five-car Amtrak train came whizzing by across the road, the trees were colorful, and I was happy to find this alternative to Indiana Toll Road fast food franchises.

Smokey's marquee dishes appear to be its pulled pork sandwich and baby back ribs. Desserts such as an apple dumpling and pumpkin pie looked good and truly homemade.

You're welcome. I didn't think to look for a smoker. I'm a funny guy to be writing about a bbq joint since I rarely eat beef or pork, sticking with the fowl and the fish.

Have you seen the older Chesterton and Michigan City posts about other places in that area, such as Lucrezia's and the thin pizza place in the Town of Pines? I'm eager to try them the next time I leave the toll road.

I hope you get a chance to check out Smokey's and find tasty bbq there.
