Hiya hounds!

My wife and I (who live in Chicago) are going to see Simon and Garfunkel in Auburn Hills, Michigan this coming Sunday, October 19th. We are coming in the night before, so we may have time for one breakfast, one lunch and one dinner out.

We will probably be staying at the Red Roof Inn in Rochester Hills, Michigan (2580 Crooks Rd, 48309). Please tender your recommendations to us. Genre and price are flexible, from dine-in to take-out/delivery.

We mostly want something high quality and/or something we cannot get in Chicago. Feel free to comment on the restaurants I grabbed off of previous postings at a quick scan...

Thanks!

Of your list, I've only been to Tribute, Mon Jin Lau, and Cafe Bon Homme. Of the three, I'd recommend Tribute very strongly. Maybe I didn't order the right thing at Mon Jin Lau, but it seemed to be pretty standard Chinese to me, and nothing really to write home about. Cafe Bon Homme is nice enough, but really second tier. Tribute is the only fine dining in Detroit that really compares to the level you can find in Chicago. And the chef was named best Midwest chef in this year's James Beard Awards.

If you want something that's upscale but a little more unique to Detroit, maybe check out Sweet Georgia Brown's? It's upscale soul food, located in Greektown. I haven't been, but it sounds interesting.

I've been to The Breakfast Club, and while it is good, I think Toast (in Ferndale, on Woodward just north of 9 Mile Road) is better. Everything I have had there is excellent and the Bourbon French Toast is wonderful.

I would heartily recommend both Emily's and Cafe Bon Homme, but they're a goodly drive from Rochester Hills. The Lark is more advantageously (is that a word?) located, very very exceedingly expensive but basically very much worth it. Let me suggest Il Posto, upscale Italian and not too far of a drive (29110 Franklin, Southfield; 248-827-8070). I've heard good things about Bistro Bourdeau, but have never been. It's the best geographic choice among those you've listed. Happy hunting!

Hey Hounds!

We ended up staying at a Westin in Southfield. Four-star hotel, very nice, got it for $50/night through Priceline.com. The room service food was decent but way overpriced.

We only had one opportunity to go out, and we went to the Tribute. However, they were closed for a special engagement, so they pointed us across the street to Hong Hua (Fine Chinese Dining), 27925 Orchard Lake Road, Farmington Hills, MI. The food was pretty good and not really overpriced. We spent about $45 total, which included 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, hot tea, tax and tip. The service was great.

Oh, and BTW, Simon and Garfunkel were great! Better, I thought, than that Central Park Concert in the early eighties, but maybe because I was actually there this time.

Dassit fer now.

Cheers,
Matthew
