we're there twice a year. while we've found some great places for dinner (freighthouse rules), breakfast still lacks. please don't tell me it's limited to fayze's, mr d's, and the hungry peddler!

  1. I recently had the chance to have a wonderful breakfast in a relaxed and peaceful setting at Culina Mariana Café and Eatery, in the Pilgrim Center at the new Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe near La Crosse. I would have to say it is easily one of the most relaxing and flavorful breakfasts I have ever eaten out. Gave the whole day a nice perspective.

Reasonable prices and gourmet foods make for a great combination.

At least once a year I visit my cousin who lives on Nakomis Ave., a little spit of land in the Black River. I usually stay at the Midway because I'm almost directly across from them. My question, I have eaten a number of times at this little place heading north on Rose Street and past I-90. It's maybe 10 miles north and on the west side of the highway, dining to the left and a small bar to the right. I can never remember the name but there aren't many other places in the area. Do you happen to know of it? It is rustic, seems to be patronized by locals and was decent chow. They serve buffalo meat.

That would be Marge's Lakeview Lounge & Restaurant, N5135 Hwy 53, Onalaska, WI, 608-781-0150.

I have eaten there but have not yet written a review of the restaurant. Thanks for reminding me. Buffalo steak was good and I recommend dipping each forkfull in the au jus that they provide with the meal. It is quite tasty and lean. Good service, dessert only fair. Slight smell of cigarette smoke from the bar in the non-smoking dining room. Overlooks the river. Breakfast served until 2pm with a variety of selections. I have not had breakfast there.

I would highly recommend the restaurant that Kraig suggested for a peaceful, relaxing breakfast of excellent quality. My review of the Culina Mariana is on our website. Culina Mariana is on the south end of La Crosse and Marge's is on the north end, in Onalaska.

Thanks for the reply, it was late last September when we were there last. I love that area in the fall! We've eaten at Marges probably 6 times but it was always the case of...ok, we drive down this road and eventually we find it. Breakfast was good, I know one time I had buffalo sausage but that was a few years ago. We'll try Culina next visit.

Autumn is outstanding in the river valley and surrounding hardwood forest areas.
            More breakfast info:
The best place to have a Sunday Champagne brunch now only serves their brunch on holidays. That was the Boatworks restaurant in the Radisson of La Crosse. The Boatworks didn't have a very big selection of dinner items but their brunch was outstanding. However, if you enjoy a Sunday Champagne brunch, River Jack's in the Best Western has a nice one but they only serve very dry Champagne. My wife and I prefer sweet.

And if you can wait until 11:00am to eat breakfast, and have never been on the Mississippi River, the Island Girl has a breakfast cruise on Sunday only. It's about a 90 minute round trip and the fall colors are spectacular from the boat. Colors typically peak the 2nd week in October but it may be sooner, or not as brilliant, this year because of the drought. Info and maps for all of these places on our website. Enjoy.

I have the best of both worlds when I go to LaCrosse, my cousins husband has a wonderful pontoon boat, they make some wonderful appetizers and we go off and find an anchorage, sip some wine and enjoy the colors! Their home is on a channel with a wonderful balcony to enjoy the view and a fine dinner from.
