My wife and I will have one night in the twin cities but won't have "Goodfellows clothes". This is our only restriction. What are out fellow chowhounds favorites in the TCs?

Well, jeez, I wouldn't hesitate to go to Goodfellows in my non-Goodfellows clothes. Most twin cities restaurants are pretty casual. Alma, Auriga, Lucia's are three excellent restuarants where no one would blink if you came in wearing blue jeans.

I'm partial to the 128 Cafe on Cleveland Avenue in St. Paul. Someone mentioned their ribs in the current Twin Cities BBQ thread, and they are indeed excellent. I've never had a bad meal at this place and most diners are quite casually dressed. After dinner, stroll a couple of blocks north to Marshall Ave., hang a right and walk half a block up Marshall to Izzy's Ice Cream Cafe -- the best ice cream in the Cities.

I agree with the other people posting: no Goodfellows clothes is not much of a restriction. I have seen people in jeans at some of the nicest places in town like Aquavit. If you are looking for "fine dining", but more casual/less expensive than Goodfellows/ Aquavit, my picks are: Auriga, Vincent, Lucia's, and Zander. If you are looking for casual, my picks are: Punch Pizza and Jasmine Deli or Quang (for Vietnamese).

Twin Citians are among the worst dressed urbanites in the country. People here believe it is an inalienable right to dress poorly or improperly. That's a long way of saying you needn't worry about proper attire, but its still ok in my book to do so.

For truly casual places I like Mildred Pierce and Barbary Fig in St. Paul. Zander is also pretty casual and excellent, also in St. Paul.

I hope you enjoy your stay in the Twin Cities. Eli's, a bar and grill on Hennepin Ave in Minneapolis, has great food and is very casual. Auriga and Restaurant Alma are a little more classy, but one would not feel out of place in shirtsleeves. I'd also recommend the Muddy Pig, a neighborhood bistro on Selby and Dale in St Paul. They have an excellent menu. Be sure to sit out on the patio.
