I’ve read about fried brain sandwiches in St. Louis, but only in passing mention, not specifics here on Chowhound.

The opening paragraph to Lycos.com Travel on St. Louis is the following:
When they're not boasting about their city and chiding tourists who call it "St. Louie," locals at the pubs along Route 66 merrily toast the Cardinals over tasty fried-brain sandwiches. It's a St. Louis thing.

Two places I read that serve fried brain sandwiches are:
CAFÉ MANHATTAN
Dieckmeyer’s

Anyone had one? And how was it?

I love a good brain sandwich, but I didn't realize it was supposed to be one of our regional specialities. The purists here eat it on rye with a thin sliced sweet onion. The brains are usually dredged in eggwash and then in cracker meal before frying them so they are crispy on the outside and soft and sweet on the inside. It's a good tatse, although one must have a particular mindset if you cook them yourself. My missus isn't very found of me when I cook them or any type of organ meat. (Like the tripe I sauteed the other day, Tuscan style..LOL) (It was pretty nappy:)

I get this question (where can I get a brain sandwich) once or so a month. Here's my latest list:

Ferguson's Pub, 2925 Mt. Pleasant, 351-1466.
You can buy the fixin's at Kenrick's Meat Market, 4918 Weber, 631-2440.
It's also possible, but unconfirmed, that they're still available at a west county bar, Carmody's, 49 Clarkson Road just north of Manchester Road.

If they still serve them, there's a place on Gravois Road (south side, in Afton) that had a sign out-side that states this. My mom used to make them for us kids for years before I knew what they were. I actually loved them!

Karen's Restaurant in Belleville serves them every day. Most of the old time taverns in Belleville serve them too. Let me know when you want to come over and I will figure out the best one and go with you.
