So far the best restaurant we've found in Indie is Peter's, located across from the Keystone Mall. The food's interesting and well-prepared, and there's a nice wine list.

Do you know what part of the city you will be in?

The reason that I ask is that I live and work downtown and rarely get to the north side where both Peter's and Something Different are located. I can tell you that Peter's is consistently voted the best restaurant in the city by the readers of Indianapolis Magazine. Peter George (owner of Peter's) has also recently returned to his roots in the downtown Indianapolis/Fountain Square area by opening Bistro 936, a moderately priced (most entrees in the $10 - $20 range) bistro. The food is wonderful and there is an extensive wine list. This is our favorite restaurant.

I have eaten at Snax, which is the sister restaurant to Something Different. It's right next door and shares the same kitchen but is much more casual. I have been impressed with the creativity of the food.

If you are downtown, in addition to Bistro 936, you may want to consider Dunaway's which is an upscale Italian restaurant. Jeff Dunaway used to be one of the co-owners of St. Elmo's Steak House (see below). After a falling out with his business partner he sold out and opened Dunaway's. The food is excellent.

If you and your guests are leaning towards steak, I would recommend St. Elmo's. We have all of the usual corporate expense account steak houses (i.e. Morton's, Ruth's Chris, Shula's...) but, in my opinion, St. Elmo's is the place to go. It has been in operation in the same location since 1902 and has food and service that's second to none. If you're a horseradish fan you've got to try the shrimp cocktail! The horseradish in the sauce will clean you're sinuses out for weeks!!! I love it.

Another downtown spot that you may want to investigate is Agio. This restaurant in the theater district on Massachusetts Ave., very close to downtown. It has a Mediterranean menu and a nice wine list and is decorated with works of art from local artists. This place recently underwent a change in ownership and I haven't eaten since the change took place, but people who I know who have eaten there say the food and service is still top notch.

Some other places in downtown Indy that you might consider:

The restaurant at the Canterbury Hotel is absolutely wonderful! The service is without a doubt the best in the city. The menu is unique in that it there are usually fresh game animal choices as well as classic English dishes (along with nicely prepared steaks and seafood). The restaurant is in a beautiful but intimate (some would say small) space, so you should definitely make reservations if this is your choice. (If I were to suggest a place out of all that I've mentioned, this would be it.)

Another place that I thought of is Mikado, a Japanese restaurant here in downtown. Great sushi as well as other Japanese specialties.

Malibu on Maryland is another good downtown spot, specializing in steaks and seafood.

The chain restaurant Palomino is always pretty good and has a very chic interior.
