I'm new to Minneapolis and am in need of a good coffee house in the South Minneapolis area. I prefer the smaller, unique places over the all too crowded chains like Starbucks. Thanks!

Haven't been around Mpls in awhile, but here are some recs based on knowledge from a few years ago: Muddy Waters on Lyndale (tattoo & piercing crowd), or (if it's still around) Joe's Java Hut (popular w/rockabilly Vespa riders) just down the street. In Uptown, on Lake St. near Lake Calhoun is/(was?) Cafe Wyrd, very friendly, with a largely gay clientele. Dunn Bros. & Caribou are local coffee-worship temples.

Please update these as necessary.

The Cities have a great coffee culture, so I'm sure you'll find plenty of other places that suit your particular inclinations.

Those suggestions sound good for the most part. I think, as you feared, that Cafe Wyrd is no longer with us. The cafe that opened in that space is supposed to be quite good though.

It's the same people at the old Wyrd, only now they call it Barbette's.
East on Lake Street, almost to the river is a place called Blue Moon. It's nice there, I think. And I really second the recommendation of Anodyne, especially the peaberry. They'll grind it for you take home, and they'll keep your coffee card on file at the register so you don't have to find it in your purse or wallet, before you're thinking clearly.

I used to work in Uptown but I haven't been in a while. So I came up with this list from memory. It should keep you awake for days. Others can make additions or corrections.

1. Dunn Bros. - Lake & Humboldt or 36th & Hennepin.
2. Anodyne - 41st & Nicollet
3. Coffee Gallery - Franklin & Aldrich
4. Muddy Waters - 26th & Lyndale
5. Bryant Lake Bowl - Bryant & Lake (not a coffee shop per se, but good coffee.)
6. Vera's Cafe - 29th & Lyndale
7. Blue Moon - 39th & Lyndale
8. Cyber Cafe - Lake & Lyndale
9. Bob's Java Hut - 26th & Lyndale

Believe it or not there are good coffee shop outside of Uptown (St. Paul for example) so keep your eyes open and you should have no trouble finding a place. A few years ago you couldn't turn around in Mpls. without tripping over a coffee shop. Good luck.

Michael -
I hate to be the ghoul of this thread but I think Cyber Cafe is also closed. I seem to recall seeing empty windows there when I was driving past in the last couple months.
On a happier note: St. Paul coffee shops.
The original Dunn Brothers is at Snelling and Grand; I can't compare it to other DB locations but I have a soft spot in my heart for it (DB coffee fueled the late nights to get me through college).

There's also another coffee shop in the same area; its a couple doors west from the Ruminator bookstore. I've been there fairly recently and it seemed nice with a short but tasty looking menu.

Black Dog Cafe is in the Northern Warehouse - kitty-corner (SE) from the downtown farmers market location at 4th and Broadway. It was a stop on my first date with my (to-be) wife so I remember it fondly.

Swede Hollow Cafe is just up Dayton's bluff from downtown St. Paul on East 7th Street. I haven't been there but have read good things about it.

OK, its not coffee but TeaSource sells a fantastic variety of teas. Its at 752 Cleveland Ave S in the Highland Park neighborhood and you can get tea by the cup or purchase in bulk.

Finally, does anybody else remember the Bad Habit? It was a coffee shop on St. Peter St. in downtown St. Paul about 10-12 years ago. I used to go there as a college freshman; I recall feeling an other-worldly delight in hanging out among the punks and poets and other denizens of the pre-starbucks coffee house universe. The Bad Habit is long gone now, sadly...

With clouds painted on the ceiling and an almost-balcony with small tables and lined with antique books? Sure do. RIP.

How about the place in the bottom floor of the artist's coop next to the St. Paul public market? Used to be Kupernicus...

I too remember the Bad Habit, where I first began to learn that there was coffee other that Taster's Choice. Kupernicus, to which you refer is now the Black Dog mentioned earlier.
As for the Swede Hollow Cafe, the coffee is good, the staff very friendly, but more than that I challenge anyone to find a BETTER carmel roll anywhere! This place has the most tender, gooey, sticky, sweet carmel rolls in the State. I can't say enough good things. Perhaps this will begin a new thread, where is the best Carmel roll in the Midwest?
