Good eats in Cincinnati

  • k

Goin' to Cincity a week from Sunday, looking for recommendations for Chinese, seafood and steaks up north of downtown. Staying at the Holiday Inn at 275 and 42. Know of any authenic Hong Kong style Chinese on the north side? I'll have the baby back ribs at Mongomery Inn one night (world class!). Used to eat at China Gourmet on Erie St. in Hyde Park years ago; is it still great? Would appreciate advice on top notch seafood and steaks. Prefer not to drive downtown as those one-way streets mess with my mind!

  1. It's been a while since I moved away from Cincinnati so take the following with a grain of salt.

The last time I went to China Gourmet it was as great as it ever was. Since the last time I was there, Bing Moy, who founded the restaurant and provided it with most of its character and charm, has retired and his sons have taken over. The reviews that I have read, however, still give it very high marks.

A couple of my very favorite places to eat were Chester's Roadhouse and The Grand Finale. Chester's is part of the Maisonette group (Maisonette, La Normandy, The Golden Lamb and Chester's Roadhouse) and does a great steak! They also do lots of other things very well and they have an extensive wine list. Chester's is on Montgomery Road just north of The Montgomery Inn. Dress nicely if you choose to go here.

The Grand Finale, which just celebrated its 25th anniversary, is in Glendale at the corner of Sharon Rd and Glendale-Millford Road (Rt. 747) close to where you will be staying. It's in a beautiful Victorian house and serves French influenced cuisine. Make sure that you have a crepe, which you can get as a side dish, and whatever you do, don't pass on the dessert! You're just not going to find any better!
