Haven't you guys ever heard of Mai Lee on Delmar. The best vietnamese food around. Their Chinses dishes are excellent also. I do not live in St. Louis...but whenever we visit family 2 or 3 times a year we all flock to Mai Lee. So fresh and exquisite. Very reasonable, too, I might add.
I suppose this is about the last time I'll post on the St. Louis board, since I'm now living in Philly, but I couldn't resist.
I've known a lot of people who like Mai Lee, and I've never been able to figure out why. It seems to me there are at least 3 better Viet Namese restaurants in St. L--Saigon Cafe, Vietnam Star, and Pho Grand. But it's not just that I think these are better; I really think the food at Mai Lee isn't particularly spectacular. I'd love to know what others think of it, and particularly why those who like it like it.
Note, I also don't like the crowded quarters at Mai Lee. I figure if you're in St. Louis, the home of big spaces, you might as well eat without bumping the elbows of the people sitting next to you. But that's really a secondary concern. If I thought the food was worth it I wouldn't complain.
Incidentally, are Mai Lee and Vietnam star owned by the same people, or are the menus just designed by the same person?
On the topic, last time I ate at Saigon cafe the food was good, but the service was not nearly as friendly as before. THe only difference I can point to that may have influenced this--and I offer this without commenting on whether it was a contributing factor or not, since it could have been just an off night--is that previously I have gone by myself or with white friends and last time I was with four black friends. I do hope this is not why we got bad--I mean, really bad, mean, angry--service. The food was as good as usual, but I was kind of annoyed.
