Places that serve sushi made with brown rice?

  • r

A friend of mine went to New York and there were places that served sushi made with brown rice.

Has anyone ever seen this in Chicago? If so, where? I'd love to try it!

  1. I haven't seen it here yet. I went to Miami a month ago and had it there... I actually enjoyed it - it added to the texture of the roll. I think its best for makis and not necessarily for nigiri pieces.

There are ready-made brown rice maki available at whole foods--which are actually, for grocery store sushi, not too shabby. As far as restaurants serving brown rice maki, I can't think of any offhand, but am always on the lookout. I love the nuttiness and of course the health benefits brown rice adds to maki.

    2. I thought I saw it at Sea Ranch in Wilmette -

      1. At the risk of being skewered for naming a fast-food sushi place... Toyko Lunch Box makes brown rice maki. I know it's not great sushi, but it's a good, fast lunch option downtown and beats getting BK or MacDonald's any day.

        1. Sushi Ai in Palatine and Wildfish in Arlington Heights serve sushi with black rice that is outstanding. Very nutty and very different. Highly recommend it. I wish more places would jump on the alternative rice wagon!

          1. I was at Sushi Wabi on Randolph yesterday and saw a note at the bottom of the menu offering an option of brown rice for $.50 extra
