First of all, before you go running out the door, check out what the hospital has to offer. Being that there are lots of people who are in the same situation as yourself, plus the fact that it's no slouch as hospitals go, their food has a reputation as being surprisingly good. I've heard several stories recently from friends who have had family members there where they have raved about the food. Go figure.

The hospital cafeteria is one of the best I've eaten in. It's operated by Au Bon Pain, if I'm remembering correctly.

Across the street from the Galter Pavilion (where many of the out-patient procedures and specialists offices are located and which joins the Feinberg Pavilion - where patient rooms are) is a branch of Corner Bakery which offers-up good sandwiches and soups, and, of course, pastry).

You can actually get delivery to Northwestern Hospital since there may not be a lot of take-out very close to the hospital. Grubhub has good listings of delivery by area of the city.

Having had a c-section there not too long ago, I found that there were many choices for lunch. There are a bunch of lunch trucks that camp out near the hospital to feed the students and residents. For example, Potbellies offers good sandwiches and there is a pizza truck too. Connie's or Lou Malnati's, I can't remember. You can walk to Michigan ave. for many, many options. I don't think there is hospital (in our city) located in a more food oriented neighborhood. One night, my husband took a cab to Maggiano's and brought us back a feast.

You could take a short walk over to Water Tower Place at 835 N. Michigan Avenue. There you will find Foodlife. It's basically a food court but the food is done by Lettuce Entertain You instead of the usual Mickey D's and Panda Express. The quality of the food is better and varied. You can get everything from a salad, to comfort food, to stir fry, to Cajun. It's possible that they might even deliver???

Best of luck to your friend.

I think the cafeteria at Northwestern is not far off from Foodlife, as far as what's offered and the quality of the food goes. I recall seeing stir fry, good burgers, deli sandwiches and other foods and specialties of the sort. I've never seen a hospital cafeteria/cafe as good at this one. The prices at the hospital will be less than Foodlife, and you won't have to walk 3-4 blocks to get there, unless, of course, you want to stretch your legs. In that case, there are many places in the neighborhood to choose from.

I have a friend who is undergoing chemo biweekly at Northwestern. The cafeteria food is quite good and draws a few people from outside the hospital complex.

Foodlife is also a good choice and a short walk. However, it is tricky to get to. You enter the Water Tower Place. Go up the escalator to the 2nd floor and down the escalator to the Mezzanine. It took me a long time to find it the 1st time I went there four years ago.

Re Spice of Life Cafeteria at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, when I did a stint of staying overnight with my husband I discovered that except for about an hour before dawn when they shut down to clean the floor, they actually are open all night even when they appear not to be. You can't get in the front way but can go in through the tray return section. This is a good cafeteria, best by far at lunch when all the stations are open. If you are in a race to get back up to someone's bedside I recommend their pretty good macaroni & cheese as it's very quick---you can just sort of inhale it. BTW prices at Spice of Life are about one-third of what they are in neighborhood restaurants. If you need a walk, consider WholeFoods organic market (Huron between State and Dearborn) which has a vast array of hot prepared foods and cold salads and tables for sitting down with them. Big Bowl (Ohio just west of Rush) has good stir-fries. And you've probably discovered Corner Bakery (St Clair & Erie) which does better breakfasts than Spice of Life.

A couple more ideas which haven't been mentioned so far: L'Appetito in the lower level of the Hancock Building for panini and Italian deli items; a little east and south of the hospital is a branch of Treasure Island, an upscale grocery store. You can get sandwiches made there at their deli counter and perhaps pick up some interesting beverages, cookies, etc for a picnic in the room.

Of course, there's the large Au bon Pain and the Spice of Life Cafeteria right next to eachother in the hospital.

I know alot of people don't like Chipotle, but if you do, there's one very nearby to the hospital and open 'til 10 (Ontario and Fairbanks/Columbus Drive). There's also a West Egg Cafe which specializes in breakfast on that corner, but don't go on weekends as it's packed.

Tutto Pronto on McClurg and Ontario has surprisingly good Italian take-out as well. Additionally, the trucks in front of Northwestern Law/Med Schools on Superior btwn Fairbanks and Lake Shore Drive offer a somewhat variable panoply. The Thai place on Ohio between Fairbanks and St. Clair will also do take out/delivery, and the Chinese place (Schezwan) on Ontario and Michigan does take-out but not delivery, I think. Eppy's Deli across the street (and over a small bit) from Chiptole offers decent NY deli fare.

Honestly, if you're literally running out, Water Tower and Hancock are a tad far, even if only 4-5 blocks. One more thing, although N. Michigan has some options for food, it's pretty bad for takeout.

Hi,

I am about to leave work at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. It may be too late for the original poster to benefit from this but I'll leave this out there for posterity.

Bice Grill which is next door to Bice Restaurant is an excellent and inexpensive alternative to dining at the admittedly good Spice of Life cafeteria. They offer Italian style sandwiches and pizza baked in a fireplace like oven. They also have great salads made to order. All for not much more than the price of lunch at the hospital. In addition, the amount of food you get for the low price is obscene. Amazingly the place is usally pretty quiet around lunchtime. They have outdoor seating and service is usually pretty quick. Unfortunately, they are only open during lunch hours Monday-Friday. I think they are closed on weekends.

Another alternative is the food court at the Saks Fifth Avenue Mall on Michigan avenue one block north of the hospital on the west side of the street. They have a Panda Express, a Mc Donalds, a Japanese takeaway, a Philly's best steak type of place, etc. Given the alternative and the time, I would prefer to eat at Bice's.
