I like Room 12 for breakfast at

1152 S. Wabash
Chicago, IL 60605

I can't find their menu online, but it is virtually the same as their northside sister restaurant the bongo room

Unless it has re-opened in the last month or two, last I heard Room 12 was closed due to water damage from a main break and the owner was looking for a new spot. I was at the Bongo Room late winter and the maitre'd guy said it was unlikely they'd be reopening 12 there. Anyone have any more recent skinny?

I live a few blocks away from Room 12, and they recently put a sign up in the window indicating that it would re-open in July. All of the furniture and everything else is still in the space, and the Room 12 sign is still on the door (and windows). I would think if they were closing it they would have cleared the place out a while ago.

Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Getting back on topic, I'm a big fan of Orange on Harrison. Another suggestion would be Grace O'Malleys on South Michigan (just south of 14th Street). They have brunch on Sundays, and I've heard it's pretty good.

White Palace has a very good b'fast selection in a retro-diner atmosphere, but the service is inconsistent. Their buttery pancakes and huevos con chorizo are both good.

I've never been to either of these places, so caveat emptor, but there's Orange on Harrison west of Dearborn and a place I think called 1212 at Michigan and Roosevelt. The storied Lou Mitchell's on...West Jackson?...might be open Sunday morning, too.

Unfortunately, Room 12 (Wabash & Roosevelt) is not scheduled to reopen until July.

Orange on Harrison (75 W. Harrison St.) is an alternative. It has a more interesting menu than your usual everyday breakfast place and a nice ambience, altho some think it's overpriced.

Another alternative is Hackney's (733 S. Dearborn St.) which also has a pleasant ambience and a decent traditional breakfast.

Manny's is closed on Sundays but if you can handle quesadillas, tortillas, and enchiladas for breakfast the Maxwell Street market is just on the other side of the river.

Lou Mitchell's is open on Sunday, but at 565 W. Jackson Blvd., it's a bit of a hike.
