great Lakes- son navy recruit-place to eat
Hi,
My son will be graduating from basic training in April and we are looking for a good place to eat in the great lakes area that is not a major chain of restaurents. Any type of food wood be fine. But i would like some atmosphere.
Hi,
ARe you looking for a place for a celebratory meal? Do you have a price range or food preference? Or do you just need to keep yourself fueled?
Just within 10 miles south of Great Lakes is Lake Forest, Highland Park, Highwood, Northbrook and Deerfield. You might want to scan the board checking out what is available there.
If I have a better feel of what you are looking for, then I can suggest better.
Congratulations on your son's achievement.
Regards,
Cathy2

Miah's Mom,
I second Cathy's comments and question. Is there a particular type of cuisine you would prefer and price range? Having said that, one of my favorite places for a special lunch or dinner is Country Squire Restaurant in Grayslake, IL. It is about 10 miles west of Great Lakes and takes about 20 minutes. The setting is wonderful -- a former estate with nice gardens. The food is diversified American, good quality, and reasonably priced. You can check their menu and features at their website: www.csquire.com or click the link below.

Country Squire sounds like the perfect place. I went to the web site and i think we can all find something there to eat that we like. His grandparents will be coming down from MI and we will be coming up from Tn. thanks for the info and the link.

Lake Bluff is the next town south of North Chicago, where Great Lakes is located. There's a new restaurant in Lake Bluff that's FANTASTIC. It's called Inovasi. The food is outstanding and the price makes it extremely reasonable. I wrote a long detailed report on my wonderful dinner there a few weeks ago, and posted it on Chowhound at http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/687962 The restaurant's website is www.inovasi.us

Ray Radigan's, in Pleasant Prairie, WI - just over the Illinois/Wisconsin line. It's an old school road house supper place; don't know if it's open for lunch. I enjoyed a great meal there last year.
If you click on the link appearing at the end of this sentence you will be taken to an online photo album of mine containing a half-dozen or so pix I took during my dinner/late lunch visit: http://travel.webshots.com/album/5708...

Well, Pleasant Prairie is pretty far (almost 14 miles from the base). Rather than traveling that far, you may as well go to Highwood (8 miles), which has quite a few decent places, including Gabriel's ( www.egabriels.com ) for upscale Italian-French food, Froggy's the French bistro ( www.froggyscatering.com/01-frenchcafe.html ), La Casa de Isaac ( www.lacasadeisaac.com ) for Mexican food, and , the Curry Hut ( www.curryhutrestaurant.com ) for Indian food. But Inovasi is better than all of these, and it's only 2 miles from the base.

If you ALSO want something casual, I would suggest the Silo in Lake Bluff. It's not far from the base. They are known for their pizza (deep-dish or thin) but they also have good burgers and chili etc. We've been many times over the years and always enjoyed our food and experience.

Congratulate your son and please thank him for his service to us all.
