Does anyone know a local resource for Heritage turkeys for Thanksgiving? Chicago or northern suburbs. I've found a few mail order, but would rather buy locally.

I'd suggest ordering through www.chicagocooks.com

They are working with Caveny Farms, a very small family farm just west of Champagne, which raises a limited number of Heritage Turkeys every year. Their primary market is the Chicago area.

Once the turkeys are processed, I believe they will be delivered to Chicago for pick-up-- most likely at one of the Green City Holiday markets on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. This market is at the Lincoln Park Zoo. I also think that you can drive down to the Caveny Farm and pick it up yourself. It's just west of Champaign and about a two and a half hour drive.

Henry's Organic Farm should be able to help. They have a stand every saturday at the Evanston farmer's market. If I'm not mistaken, Henry's sister works with a cooperative that raises and sells Heritage Turkeys. We bought one from her/them last year and it was GREAT! Here's Henry's website and/or you could go to the farmer's market http://www.henrysfarm.com
