i will be visiting chicago soon. i will eat at blackbird, my favorite chicago restaurant. but i also want to go to superdawg! i will be staying at the luxurious hotel cass just north of donald trump's new project. what is the best way to travel way out milwaukee avenue to superdawg? my limo will be in the shop so i am thinking of public transportation.
                               thank you

Take the L (blue line) to the Jefferson Park stop, get off, take the escalator up to the street and catch the Milwaukee Ave bus Northbound to Devon. Superdawg is at Milwaukee/Devon. There are a few but the #56 I think is the main one. Probably take you 45-60 minutes depending on the time of day.

Course you could always cab it.

Or, if you were adventurous, you could take the bus all the way up. You'll go through such beauteous hoods as Wicker Park, Logan Square, Old Irving, Portage Park, Gladstone Park...

as long as it isn't rush hour, i was also suggest taking the bus all the way up.

you can easily hop on the #56 downtown, in front of old navy on washington/state, or walk one block south to madison & hop on going west (saves you from doubling back around at michigan avenue).

you'll see some great neighborhoods, some serious ethnic 'hoods, and a great bit of the city. milwaukee has been a major thoroughfare for a long time.

then, on the way back, maybe transfer to the blue line at some point & check out that ride.

I only want to add to the great suggestions already given, go to another transitchicago page via the link and check out the Visitor Pass options for an economical way to utilize public transportation in your explorations!

While the #56 bus can be more interesting than the Blue Line to get to Jefferson Park, that station is the northern terminal for the #56 route. To go north of Jefferson Park you need to transfer to the #56A (North Milwaukee) route. The northern terminal for #56A is slightly north of Superdawg.

I sure don't want to be a wet blanket on your ambitious plans . . . but IMO it's a pretty long public transit trek for a hot dog. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Superdawg and have ingested numerous calories there but I have a car . . . and the experience is greatly different if you don't have wheels. If they are busy the little inside area for walk-up orders can be jammed so you will either have difficulty eating or be forced to eat outside. I just stepped back inside and it's chilly and gloomy with expectations of rain. I'm thinking when you take your trip if it's 10* colder and wet (or worse) it could be a less-than-fun experience.

Again, I admire your can-do spirit to seek out a kitchy icon like Superdawg but wanted to inject some reality based upon the vagaries of Chicago weather. Depending on time of day and your luck transiting from train to train to bus it could be an hour each way.

I would hop on the Red line at the Chicago stop and head south (95th street direction) to the loop. Get off at the Washington stop and transfer to the blue line heading towards O'hare. Get off at Jefferson Park and then take the #56A bus to superdawg (NAGLE & MILWAUKEE)

You can enter your start point and end point addresses at this site and it will give you the various routes you can take.

Grand, on the Red Line, not Chicago, would be the closest El stop to the Cass Hotel (though it's not a long walk to the Loop from there either).

I don't mean to hijack the thread by any means, but I had a question.

This thread attracted me to superdawg enough that we visited this great establishment last night. Unfortunately, I don't think we followed the correct car ordering protocol.

We hit the button to order, but it sounded like the carport order taker said that we had to order inside? Does that sound right? We were suprised as we saw others who had their food brought out to their car on trays. Can someone give instructions on how to order?

FWIW, in the Akron area of Ohio, there is a great place called Swensons that is a similar drive-in joint. When you drive up, you flick on your lights and then a server will run out to your car with your order.
