Can anyone recommend some good Mexican restaurants in the far south suburbs, specifically Crete, Park Forest, Steger, or Chicago Heights?

Thanks!

  1. El Cortez and Mario's in Old Blue island are good. There were several in the Heights that have closed.

    1. We lived in that area for over 20 years and there were lots of good Mexican places in the Heights, they may be closed by now tho. There was a good Pepe's in South Heights and also a Pepe's in Matteson by the Mall. For a chain place, the food is pretty good and they have great Margarita's. Also there is L.A. Cafe in Richton Park on Govenors, just off of Saulk Trail. We haven't lived in that area for over 10 years, but I see Pepe's in Matteson and La.Cafe are still there. Hope that helps.

Oak Forest ain't FAR south, but I've heard raves about Hacienda Jalapenos, which despite its cutesy name appears to serve upscale Mexican food, more of the Frontera Grill type than of the tacqueria type, and was the subject of a Chicago Trib review. The following info comes from the thumbnail summary I clipped.

        15426 S. Cicero
        Oak Forest
        708-535-9127

        Open: Dinner Tues.-Sun.
        Entree prices: $12-$30
        Reservations: Recommended on weekends
