Abundance Bakery Peach Cobbler
Along with my apple fritter (excellent as always) and cinnamon roll (enough to feed a family of four, also quite good), I tried Bill's new item, peach cobbler (he sells them out of the cooler by the pint). Take it home, nuke it and serve it on vanilla ice cream. Wonderful.

Hi Paul,
Yesterday at Culinary Historians, Donna Pierce, of the Chicago Tribune Test Kitchen who penned the Chowhound article, was the guest speaker on soulfood.
She commented Cobbler originated with the Dutch. However, Peach Cobbler is pure soulfood.
She also made an interesting comparison between Soulfood and Southern Food. She likened it to the song "RESPECT" when sung by Aretha Franklin and Reba McEntire. It's the same song, same Otis Redding lyrics and yet completely different interpretation. Just from reading the lyric transcripts you already FEEL a difference.

Hm. Must try it the next time. Dropped by
Saturday morning and picked up the apple fritter
(have been there twice now, but I must look really
out of place, because both times he's asked me
if I found them on the internet on chowhound,
and Ive responded in the affirmative :-) Have
you tried the banana pudding yet? Was tempted
to this time, but the apple fritter alone is
fairly big for that time of day, and I didnt
want the pudding to be sitting around in the
sun most of the day.
And, BTW, thanks for the rec of Top-notch. Wasnt
*that* hungry in the evening, but since I was
around 60th, decided to drive down to 95th
and finally try Top-Notch of which so much had
been heard and read (including a rec on Check
Please). Not sure if it was supposed to be
cheap, but it isnt really, not for a burger
place (the specality burgers with fries are
near 8 bucks IIRC, more than most burger places).
Wasnt overly hungry, so went with just a
1/4 lb cheeseburger, fries, and vanilla shake.
The burger was solidly good - have been getting
a good one up north at Mike's Drive-In (Western
and Howard) recently so the standards are
relatively high, but this was good (next time
I'll try the bigger one).
The fries were magnificent - best Ive had in a
very long time. Maybe it was just a good batch
on the day, I dont know - but they were just
outstanding on Saturday, quite memorable. And
made just the way I like them, too (never tried
Hot Doug's duck-fat fries, but didnt like his
"normal" fries at all, despite the great reviews
on his board - just dont like them that way,
I suppose. To each their own).
And my biggest regret was getting the small
vanilla shake to go. Completely excellent
it was - again among the best in a very very
long time.
Will definitely be back. Will make sure to be
hungrier the next time too, and thus go with
a bigger burger. But even if that isnt the case,
even if I happen to get there when fairly full,
I will never again make the egregious error of
ordering anything less than the large shake.
Would take a much bigger fool than Iam to not
learn from a mistake as obvious and glaring
as that one.

P.S. BTW, what can one do on Sunday? Might be
in the area on Sundays sometime soon - and Iam
already thinking how sad I'll be about it all.
Abundance will be closed, Barbara-Ann's will be
closed, Top-Notch will be closed - what are
now probably my top three choices. Isnt there
any good food in the area on the day of the Lord?

When you say Mikes Drive In do you mean Bills? Or might there be another good burger place around there? On the south side, have you tried Kevins Hamburger Heaven at 554 W Pershing (=39th)? Its not quite the same style as Bills but my guess is that people who like one would like the other. Kevins is open Sundays (it never closes as a matter of fact).
Ive long been a fan of Top Notch Beefburger Shop though I have to agree it does seem a bit expensive. But the attention to detail is there: house-ground beef fresh daily, fresh-cut fries cooked in animal fat, etc. Right now Im in the process of writing up perhaps my favorite hamburger place in the city, and certainly one of the best values (its been around a while but doesnt get much press). Its not open Sunday, alas.
As for Sunday on the South Side, if you enjoy Barbara Anns I suspect you might appreciate Lems barbecue. I believe Lems, at 311 E 75th, is open to 2am on Sunday (its closed Tuesday). Why not take advantage of a Sunday-only opportunity? BJs Market, at 8734 S Stony Island, has an all-you-can-eat buffet every Sunday for about $13. At least half the items are very good indeed.

I sensed that this was good question for wider exposure, and started a new thread above in response.
