I've already ordered the standing rib roast for Christmas dinner (Devon Meat Market, an outstanding butcher--thanks G Wiv.) Now I need a dessert. Can anyone recommend a bakery that does a particularly good buche de noel or yule log? Northwest side and suburbs preferred, but I can also do north side and downtown. I supect some of the Polish bakeries in Jefferson and Gladstone Park or Niles and Morton Grove might be potential candidates, but thought I'd throw it out here for recommendations.

Thanks.

It may not be ethnically aligned, but Tag's Bakery on Central in Evanston does a good version. While there, get some Florentine cookies, too. Central between Prarie and Hartrey. . .three blocks west of Greenbay Road.

Call either Miara's Pastry on Addison or Oak Mill Bakery in Niles and see if they make what you're looking for, or something similar. Both offer a variety of fancy tortes, pastries, etc. Anna

I've seen buche de noel at Cafe Selmarie on N. Lincoln Ave. in Lincoln Square the past couple of holiday seasons. Have not tried it but their other pastries have all generally been excellent. Not sure when they start carrying them so I would call ahead. Enjoy.

Rolf's Patisserie will set you up.....now there is no Rolf but, these guys no their way around butter cream and will make a buche to delight the "bouche". Let them know when you want it and it will be ready.

We just had their "bombe au chocolat" this evening and it was sublime.

They'll deliver it right to your door for $15 (free for orders over $75). Though I suggest you pick it up that way you can grab lunch or dinner at Paprikash which is in the hood.

Check Lutz's on Montrose. They've had yule logs in the past and chances are they do this year.

I've been getting the buche from Sweet Thang on North and Damen for about 3 years now. I like it much more than Lutz's, make sure that you call at least 48 hours in advance and ask them to make one.

Thanks for the assistance. I decided to go with convenience first, and called Oak Mill Bakery in Niles. They have them, and do not require a special order. I'd like to try the buche from the other bakeryies mentioned, but I think that this year, it will be the closest one that wins out.

Thanks again.

... and who said that you can have only ONE buche per season? I started last weekend, one buche a week, sticking to Sweet Thang but different buche each time.
