In New York we have a company called Urban Organics that delivers organic fruits and vegetables to your house for a relatively modest price. I'm looking for a similar service in Chicago. Does anyone know of a service like that in the area? Thanks in advance.

I'm using Tomato Mountain, but they don't have home delivery yet (probably not this season from the sound of it). But you can find directories at www.ecobusinesslinks.com/community_supported_agriculture.htmlandwww.organicconsumers.org/csa.htm

We get a box biweekly from timber creek farms. All organic, decently priced, delivered to your house. Produce quality is generally pretty good. Do not mistake this for a CSA or a sustainable farming project, though. Virtually all of the produce is from out-of-state.

you can get the boxes delivered weekly, biweekly, or monthly, or whenever you want (but there's only one delivery day per area per week).

You can also order individual items instead of a mixed-box, at a higher price.

An example box:

Fruit and Vegetable Box ($19.91)

1 head cauliflower
1 bunch broccoli
1 5# bag Idaho Potatoes
1 butternut squash
1 head green leaf lettuce
1 1# bag carrots
1 honey dew melon
1 pineapple
2 lemons
1 3# bag navel oranges
1 1# bag kiwi
1 Fuji apples

the actual produce in the boxes changes each week, presumably with whatever they can get the cheapest. we did once get a "galia" melon, which we've never seen for sale in the chicago area. anyone know of where to find one? it looks like a canteloupe on the outside, but like a honeydew on the inside.

Fox and Obel occasionally carries Gallia melons, but they usually disappear rather quickly. I've also seen them for sale at Treasure Island and Tony's Finer Foods (a good place and our regular grocer, but don't let the "finer" fool you), both supplied, I believe, by Certi-Saver.

I've heard terrific things about Angelic Organics (www.angelicorganics.com).

They deliver boxes of organic vegetables -- no fruits, I believe -- to neighborhoods throughout the Chicago area. (I haven't tried the service myself.) I've also heard their box "subscriptions" often sell out each season. Let us know what you think if you try them!

This is my second year with Angelic Organics. I've been really happy with their produce. I believe they sell to 800 families each year, and have pick up sites all over the Chicago area. They are sold out of the summer shares, but I think they may have some winter shares left. www.angelicorganics.com. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions.
