Callebaut chocolate

Aaron D Aug 15, 2003 03:24 PM

I know that there are chocolatiers and chefs in the city who use Callebaut chocolate, but does anyone know where to get it for regular cooking folks?

I checked Fox and Obel, but didn't see it there. There's lots of other places to check too, but I figured I'd find out if anyone here has seen it to abbreviate my search.

Thanks, I meant to include that in my original post. I was hoping to find a closer source if there is one. I would like to make that trip sometime, though, as I'm sure the chocolates are excellent.

Also, I couldn't quite tell from my earlier (albeit limited) poking around on that website, if it was actually affiliated with the Barry Callebaut producer, or if they just import and use the raw materials to make truffles and such. The relationship is not immediately apparent to me, as the Lake Forest store doesn't seem to be mentioned on the Callebaut chocolate home page.

Thanks in advance for whatever info you might have.

Callebaut chocolate can be purchased at Valli produce in Arlington Heights and Hoffman Estates. The store is a mix of produce and ethnic specialities such as Italian, Middle Eastern, Polish, etc. Last time I checked the chocolate was at the deli counter.

Whole foods, or Whole Paycheck, as we like to call it, in Evanston also has it, as does Peoples Market on Chicago Ave. I order big old blocks of it in the fall. If you are interested, I'll get the web site address for you. It's a ridiculous amount of chocolate, but it keeps forever, and you can go in with a friend if you like. It's absurdly cheap this way. Thanks for all your suggestions. We ended up at Whole Foods Lakeview. The Chopping Block also carries it, but they had only semi-sweet, not bittersweet which we were looking for. Unfortunately, Whole Foods said on the phone they had bittersweet but had only semi-sweet as well (plus dark and milk). Should work fine in this case.
