Yesterday I got a call from my daughter asking me what I wanted to do Mother's Day. Here's my problem. Two kids who keep kosher but only kosher style when eating out. Two kids who are adventuresome. Four grandkids ranging in age from 6 to 9 with various degrees of fussiness. I like Italian, Mexican, Steak and Bistro Style best. Need a childrens menu, something nice not too expensive and will tolerate kids. Also time has to be late afternoon or early evening so no brunch is possible. Two of the people are on diets on is on Atkins. Tired of our usual family places. Greek Town, Salernos as far as the city is concerned, suburban chains and deli. By the way one family lives in the Northern suburbs, one in the Western suburbs and we live downtown. I would cook to solve the problem but my apartment is too small. so HELP PLEASE.

Have you thought about Chinatown? That's where we went when our kids were little. You're going late enough in the day that you might be able to avoid the crowds. That's what we did. Phoenix might be nice. Nowdays we go to Cafe Matou as the children are more civilized, and the mother loves their food. I think they might offer a children's menu on Mother's Day. I know they offer a reasonable prix fixe menu on that day along with the regular menu. I like it especially because you can make a reservation and be seated on time with none of the fuss and muss that seems to go on at other places on special days.

Chinatown in a possibility, but Northsuburban grandkids prefer Schaumburg Chinese and then we have the problem of kosher, no pork or seafood.

Paulette,

I think your reservations are well founded about chinatown. That is one place where you are NEVER exactly sure what you are eating. I always assume there are at least two animal products in any dish from chinatown, even my veggies (hence, I eat often in chinatown!)

John's place is an inexpensive casual neighborhood restaurant. Its on Webster between Sheffield and Southport. They have a big variety of food from burgers to chicken tacos to vegetarian stir fry. Most entrees are around $10-$12. It's not the greatest food in the world, but its not bad either, and it seems to fit your needs.

If you are looking for something more upscale, Shallots is a high-end Kosher restaurant on Clark and Belden.
